  • Cross-country– 7th place finish at the Maryland Private School State Championships, with Michael Gilbert ‘20 earning All-State honors!

  • Soccer– Junior LB/CB Marc Schermer was selected by his teammates and coaches as a captain for the 2019 season.

  • Winter Sports

    • Basketball-(2-0) 78-74 win over Wakefield School and then beat host St.Andrews Episcopal School 58-55 in Championship game

    • Hockey– (2-0) beat Paul’s 9-1 and then Wootton 11-2—St. John’s next Friday at the Bears’ Den. Very deep team

  • Swimming and Diving– 2 matches but no report- not even a TWITTER account.

  • Wrestling – (1-0) FROM COACH KATZ– Welcome back to another season of wrestling.  As defending IAC champions, we hope to repeat for a second year.  We have a core of top wrestlers that will lead the way!  Tonight, it was an exciting match for the Bears in their first home match.  The match was live streamed from the wrestling room. I will let you know if future matches will also be live streamed and how to access it.  I did not realize they were starting tonight.

Our line-up was comprised of 7 seasoned veterans and 7 first year or second year wrestlers.  Tonight was an excellent example of how individuals have an impact on our community by getting involved and finding ways to contribute.  Our season as a team will depend on guys stepping up to help out the team who do not necessarily have much experience on the mat.

Sidwell Friends

The match started at 195 where first year sophomore Damion Ming.  Strong, athletic, and a good center of gravity was not enough to beat Sidwell’s top wrestler.

At 220, first year Senior Miles Tonkel made his debut and ended the match in 1:45.  I think it was the longest 1:45 seconds that Miles ever experienced as he was exhausted coming off the mat.

At 285, we bumped 2nd year wrestler Eric Cao to face the second toughest guy on the team.  Eric demonstrated toughness but could not overcome the 60 pound difference.

At 106, first year freshman, Zac Osmond, put up a good fight against an experienced opponent. He earned his first takedown and almost made it the full 6 minutes.  We then started the chain of pain….

Second year Sophomore Nate Zola (113) pinned in the second period,

Senior Patrick Townsend (120) won by forfeit,

Senior Axel Giron (126) pinned in 1:06, Junior Lorenzo Lopez pinned in 18 seconds,

Freshman Mansoor Delane (138) pinned in 28 seconds,

Junior Patrik Kielb pinned in 51 seconds, & Junior Lucas Anderson (152) pinned in 2:56.

At 160, Junior Marc Schermer lost a back and forth battle with a tough wrestler.

The Bears ended strong with two more pins at 170 (Junior Jerrold Johnson) in 3:43,

and the final match was Senior Jelani Machen (182) who pinned his guy in 26 seconds.

 Final score 60-24.

This weekend, we have the team splitting between two tournaments so everyone will get some mat time.  Four of our most experienced wrestlers with travel to McDonogh for the very challenging Ray Oliver tournament. The rest of the team will compete at the Holloway tournament at the St. James School.

McDonogh Results
