It was a night of adversity for the Bears. With a lot of talent coming back, we had to forfeit 3 matches. We would have forfeited 5 matches but, underclassmen David Diaz (182) and Eric Cao (220) bumped up a weight to help the team. Both wrestlers did their best, but the opponents still won. We had four starters out due to injuries and weight qualifications.
Despite these issues, the Bears managed to win 42-28.
The match started at 132. Sophomore Patrick Kielb started us off with a second period pin of one of Sidwell’s Senior captains.
The Quakers bounced right back and won at 138 when sophomore Matt Amitay lost 15-3. He was able to get a takedown in the last period to save the team a point.
Senior Luc Schermer won a key match. We bumped him up a weight hoping his experience would help. He won a smart match 6-3 a reversal and back points at the end of the second period.
At 152, Captain Brendon Gallagher won a close match against their best wrestler 5-0.
At 160, Sophomore Marc Schermer won another key match. Go Schermer brothers!! Marc was on his back for about 30 seconds in the second period when he rolled his opponent to his back and put him away.
At 170, Junior Jonny Gherman bumped up a weight to cover injured Jelani Machen. He got the job done and pinned his opponent in the first period. At 195, Senior Joel Desroches received a forfeit.
At 120, Junior Axel Giron also received a forfeit. The last match was quick when Sophomore Lorenzo Lopez pinned his man in less than a minute.
In exhibition matches, we went 3/6 as several of our freshmen got some needed experience on the mat. We got 2 wins from Junior Terrance Bridgers (285) and one from Sophomore Jerrold Johnson (160). All three wins were pins.
Go Bears!
December 1 & 2,2017
The Bear wrestling team continues to earn the experience needed to be a championship team. We sent all available wresters to two different tournaments this weekend. Five wrestlers were entered into the 18 team Ray Oliver Tournament hosted by the McDonogh School of Baltimore. We took 10thplace out of 18 teams with 5 wrestlers.
We had two in the finals of this prestigious tournament. At 120, Axel Giron (2-1 for the day) wrestled well as he lost in the finals to the second ranked wrestler in MD from Archbishop Spalding. At 126, Lorenzo Lopez (3-0) won the tournament. In the finals, he earned a reversal with about 25 seconds left to win 2-0.
At 132, Patrick Kielb (0-2) had a tough tournament as he faced two very tough wrestlers. Patrick did not go down without a fight. He hit a beautiful headlock on his first opponent, and almost tossed his second opponent with a body lock.
At 152, Captain Brendon Gallagher (3-2) took fourth place. He lost in the semi-finals in a tough match from a wrestler from Salesianum, DE. Brendon has now officially become the wrestler with the most career wins in Landon wrestling history. Mike Kelly’08 had 117 wins. Brendon finished the tournament at 119 wins. Congratulations, sorry Mike, your ten-year record has been broken!
At 160, Jonny Gherman (2-2) earned a couple of wins in one of the toughest weigh-classes in the tournament. He lost to one of the top wrestlers in Preps and one of the top rated wrestlers in MD
.
At the Holloway tournament hosted by St. James, the Bears took 9th out of 13 schools. This was a Varsity tournament where the rest of the team was able to enter. At 113, Junior Patrick Townsend made his season debut at weight. He went 2-2 for the day and he was eliminated in an overtime match. At 138, we had 4 wrestlers entered.
Freshman Nicholas Kopp earned his first victory of his career.
Sophomore Matt Amitay went 4-1 and earned 3rd place. Senior Luc Schermer went 3-1 and lost in overtime in the finals. Sophomores Marc Schermer (152) and Jerrold Johnson (160) both went 2-2 for the day. Senior Nick Haller (195) went 1-2 for the day.
The other wrestlers who participated and gained valuable experience were Jake Kowitz (138), Lucas MacDonald (145), Jack Bradley (160), David Diaz (170), and Eric Cao (195). Overall, it was a good weekend.
Next week, we have a busy week. We have our first home dual against Wilson High on Tuesday. Both JV and Varsity will wrestle. The Varsity will participate Friday and Saturday in the Mad Mats Tournament at Magruder High School in Derwood, MD. The JV will wrestle in a JV Jamboree at Episcopal on Thursday.
