After a rough weekend last week, the Bears came in determined to redeem themselves.  With three tough teams, the night got progressively tougher.

In the first match against Georgetown Prep, we started with Senior Patrick Townsend. He started a pounding for the next five weights: 120 Townsend pin in 1 minute, 126 Giron pin in 1:38, 132 Lopez pin in 30 seconds, 138 Amitay received a forfeit, & 145 Kielb pin in 46 seconds. At 152, Marc Schermer fought hard against their toughest Senior (returning state place winner). At 160, Jonny Gherman pinned his opponent in 3:46. At 170, Jerrold Johnson was wrestling tough until he got caught to his back. Jelani Machen stepped up next and pinned 31 seconds. At 195, Dameon Ming continues to improve, but lost a tough match 5-0. Miles Tonkel continues to show his natural abilities with a pin in 1:09. At 285, Eric Cao wrestled well against a state finalist.  Jeff Duong received a forfeit at 106.  At 113, Daniel Samuel continues to improve as a first year wrestler.  He has shown his grit and his willingness to support the team over the last two weekends.

In the second round against Woodberry, the team again started strong with 4 pins in a row: Giron (3:44), Lopez (0:27), Amitay (1:51), and Kielb (2:42).  It should be noted that Axel’s opponent was very good and had Axel on his back for about 30 seconds.  At 152, freshman Mansoor Delane lost a close battle 11-9 with both guys fighting off their back. At 160, Gherman lost a tough one to a future college wrestler 2-1. At 170, Johnson lost to one of their toughest wrestlers.  Captain Jelani got us back on track with a pin in 2:34. Three forfeits sealed the deal at 195 (Ming), 220 (Tonkel), and 106 (Duong).

The last match was as close as it gets against traditionally strong Good Counsel. The lead changed several times throughout the match, but the Bears finished strong in the end for the win.  GC knocked off some of our tougher wrestlers (Amitay, Gherman, and Delane), but some our less experienced guys stepped up.  The match started with a forfeit for Lopez.  Kielb pinned at 145.  In the strength of our line-up, we did not win again until JelaniMachen continues to show his dominance.  He beat state ranked wrestler 6-3. At 220, Tonkel continues to pull through for the team with another pin.  At 106, the Bears were down 27-21.  At 106, Zac Osmond came off the injured reserve and pulled through win a huge win in an exciting 14-10 victory. At 113, Samuel put up another good fight against a ranked wrestler, but got pinned making the team score 33-24 GC with two matches left.  We need big wins from Townsend and Giron for the victory.  Of course our Senior Bears pulled through… Townsend (4:37) and Giron (2:12).

Great night for the Bears!
