FROM COACH REED– Landon 3 V. #5 DeMatha 1

We needed this one today.  We had all but two of our starters on the field and did enough to secure a win on a hot day.  DeMatha started strong, earned a corner kick, whipped in a cross and one of their midfielders picked out of the air, full volley, and into the goal, 0 – 1 in the 3:00.

Oddly, the boys didn’t crumble, and we answered in the 7:00 when Kris Fletcher skinned two defenders down the left side, turned the corner and fed an onrushing Conrad Brady for a tap-in goal, 1 – 1.  New game.  In the 24:00, Amos Steinglass gave us a piece of magic when he drove the ball 50+ yards on a line to Nick Della Rocca, who was breaking down the right side.  Nick gathered, carried, finished, 2 – 1.  We hit the post in the 30:00, then rambled around the field for the first twenty minutes in the second half, as DeMatha pushed hard.  They drew a penalty kick in the 71:00, which was well deserved, but their forward missed high.  That rattled us and we started actually playing soccer again.  In the 76:00, Fletch, again, did some fancy stuff, drew three of their four defenders to him, and slipped the ball wide right to Zac Osmond, who danced around his marker and iced the win.

Will Single had another strong day in goal, and Nico Schermer, Dylan Thiess, Moses Fishman, Carlos Febles, and Conrad Brady went the full 80 minutes, no small feat.

FROM COACH REED–BEARS 3 v. #3 PURPLE EAGLES

Wild, raucous affair last night.  Both schools had big crowds.  Gonzaga’s field is tiny, 100 by 60, and covered with bouncy, slick turf, which made it hard for both teams to operate in the middle of the field.

We started things off early when Nico Schermer got on the business end of a set piece serve from Conrad Brady in the 5:00, 1 – 0.

Zac Osmond hit the crossbar a few minutes later and then Gonzaga returned the favor with their set piece goal, 1 – 1, in the 20:00.

Ethan Pendleton cranked one off the left post in the 30:00, but then Dylan Thiess cleared a ball off our own goal line in the 39:00.  End to end action.

Right after the half, in the 42:00, Art Keys looped a cross into the box from a set piece and Dylan Thiess finished after a mad scramble, 2 – 1.

Nine minutes later, Moses Fishman got upended in the 18 box, we were given a PK, and Kris Fletcher took care of things, 3 – 1.

Then things got crazy.  Gonzaga’s CM put down an impressive individual effort, picking up a harmless ball on the right edge, weaving through two players, and finishing from outside the area, 3 – 2 in the 66:00.  Ben Ellwood hit the post from outside the box on the other end of the field a minute later.  In the 72:00, Dylan Thiess got taken down aggressively in their box, with the ball, and the referee gave a PK.  We lined up to take the kick.  Then the ref walked over, picked up the ball and gave it to their GK because he’d changed his mind.  Shocking.  Minutes later, Fish got upended in the box again.  This time, no PK.  In the 76:00, another collision in our box, and the ref gave Gonzaga a PK, 3 – 3.  Seven cards dished out during the game, two PKs given, one given, then wiped, two corner kicks given, then wiped, throw-ins awarded, then given in the other direction.  Total chaos.

The boys stayed in it for the duration and were in good spirits this morning at practice.  Fact is, we’re on the road tomorrow for a college showcase event in PA in front of 80+ college coaches.  We’re playing a team from CT that features players from Brazil, Ecuador, Korea, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.  Should be yet another good test!
