Coaching

Mike Rutenberg L99 begins his first season with the New York Jets after joining Robert Saleh’s staff as the linebackers coach on February 11, 2021. For Rutenberg, 2021 marks his 12th season in the NFL having previously worked with San Francisco, Jacksonville and Washington. Coaching college football for seven seasons, first with UCLA (2006-08) and then with New Mexico State (2009-12), Rutenberg named the defensive coordinator at the University of San Diego (2013) before he returned to the NFL with the Jaguars initially as the assistant defensive backs coach (2013-15), then as a defensive assistant (2016-17), before serving as the assistant linebackers coach (2018-19).

Rutenberg entered the league with Washington, initially as a player personnel intern (2013),  and then working  as an assistant to Head Coach Joe Gibbs. Rutenberg was effectively Gibbs’ right-hand man, putting together the team’s daily calendar, practice schedules and meeting presentations. He also worked hand-in-hand with Gibbs to research opponents from a statistical standpoint.

A Cornell graduate, Mike played 4 years of Sprint Football there as a linebacker and offensive tackle.
