Inside the White Rocks

  • FOOTBALL

After three successful scrimmages, the Bears will play Coolidge Senior High School on Friday September at home at 5pm. The Colts went 7-1 in the DCIAA in 2019, scoring an average of 33 points in their league. Coolidge beat Anacostia in O/T in its last the public school game (championship?), but lost to Maret in the City Championship. Speed and a sound defense were apparent at Saturday’s triangular scrimmage (O’Connell and Potomac). Though the MAC and WCAC B schools had several large players, the Bears controlled the scrimmage line.

  • SOCCER

  • WATER POLO

Coach Ros’s polo team is on a road trip of testing scrimmages in Philadelphia (versus Haverford School Episcopal Academy, Germantown Academy, Malvern Preparatory School) and then Baltimore (Mt. St. Joseph High School, McDonogh School). Regular season appears to start 9/16 v. Archbishop Spaulding.

Bear Tracks

  • Baseball

Judge Stanley S. Harris L’44 died peacefully at his home on August 13, 2021, after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Becky  Harris, and by Bear sons Scott L’84, , Todd ’85  and Mark. Judge The Judge attended Horace Mann Elementary School, the Landon School, and Woodrow Wilson High School. He later served on Landon’s Board of Trustees (as did his son) and was a recipient of its Distinguished Alumnus Award. Stan’s father Bucky was a player/manager for the Washington Senators baseball team that won the World Series in 1924. Stan played baseball for the Bears and eventually for UVA. He frequented the sidelines for his sons games.

A great Bear who will be missed.

  • Randy Bednar (’17), signed in July by the Seattle Mariners following an outstanding career at the University of Maryland, was assigned to the Mariners’ affiliate in Arizona Complex League (formally known as rookie ball).  He is tearing up the league, hitting .297 with a .491 On Base Average, a .649 slugging percentage and 1.139 OPS.  In 15 games, he has 12 runs scored, 12 walks, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers and 9 RBI.

  • Four Landon grads who played together for the Bears will be continuing their baseball careers this year in college.  Dane Camphausen (’19) will be a junior at Wooster College, where he garnered all-conference honors as a first baseman last season.  Jake Davidson (’19) will be a junior pitcher at Kenyon College.  Jake played for the D.C. Grays in the Cal Ripken Summer Collegiate Baseball league, where he made the league all-star team and led his team in innings pitched and wins.  Jack Cope (’20) will be a freshman pitcher at Washington and Lee and Matthew Scioli (’21) will be a freshman outfielder at Emory.

·      Dane Camphausen split his time between the Yard Dogs of the NVCL and the BAA Eagles of the MCBL, hitting a collective .385 with seven homers and 33 RBI in 28 games. Named to Mag’s Summer Collegiate All-Star Team
