Varsity Baseball – (6-7 ; 4-4 IAC) Baseball defeated St. Stephens/St. Agnes Saturday morning, 5-3, to snap a three-game losing streak and even its IAC record at 4-4 (overall record at 6-7). The Bears have split with St. Albans, topped Episcopal twice, lost two to Bullis (in which they were ahead in both games late) and now split with St. Stephens. Two more conference games, against Georgetown Prep, are on tap this week before the IAC playoffs start next weekend. The Bears are currently tied with Bullis in third place; with St Albans in second at 5-3 and Prep in first at 6-1. The teams are tightly bunched with almost all games being close – anyone can win the conference tournament. With the poor weather and multiple rain outs, it has been difficult to get into a groove as many non-conference games have been lost to the weather, but the Bears have the talent and depth to succeed in the playoffs. Bears play Prep at home on Tuesday at 4:30 for senior day – so come out and support the Bears! In Saturday’s game, Senior Xander DeNovio pitched a complete game, scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out three. He also doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring first baseman Dane Camphausen (’19) from first. Catcher Kit Dziak (’19) and right fielder Zach Werhan (’18) each had three hits, while third baseman Jed Rosenberg (’19) contributed two hits. Highlights from prior games included: — Slick fielding and outstanding hitting from shortstop Ryan Fruehwirth (’18), — Solid production from top of the order hitter Will O’Shea (‘19), — Extra base power displays by Camphausen, — Timely hitting and steady fielding in multiple positions by Will Barufka (’18), — Outstanding starting pitching by Werhan, — Valuable relief pitching from Jake Davidson (‘19), who recorded a save in the Episcopal win after entering the game with the tying run on third in the seventh inning, and Rosenberg, and — Important contributions from DH Jack Cope (’20), outfielders Daraun Gray (’19) and freshman Mathew Sicoli. Sicoli’s year was unfortunately ended prematurely when he sustained a collar bone injury.
Thanks Steve Davidson for the report
Varsity Golf– (7-0) from Coach Luther
We finally had a beautiful day for a match. A little breeze, temps around 70, and a beautiful track on the Woodmont south course set things up well for a great day. And the Bears faced a struggling St Stephens St Agnes team who has not won a league match. Yet while the Bears won the match handily (213-269) it was not exactly pretty. In fact, the best looking thing about Landon on the course today was Scott, who once again came out to support the Bears. Thank you, Mr. Scott!
Landon was led by its Senior co-captains, West Shaw and Peter King who shot 40 and 41, respectively, decent rounds compared to the field. The rest of the results are below:
Landon (213):
Shaw 40
King 41
Muller 45
Bundy 43
Caplan 44
Samit 46
Alternates:
Powell 42
Holleman 44
IAC
The wind howled, the rains came, and the boys (plus one really talented freshman girl from Bullis) played on. One of our team goals this year, to qualify to make it back to the Metro Championship tourney in a few weeks, was accomplished today in not so sunny Ijamsville, MD. The Bears slogged through the course and finished in second, edging out Bullis by 2 strokes and avoiding the likelihood of an uncomfortable playoff round in order to determine which second IAC team gets the nod to the Metros. Your Bears were led by West Shaw who shot a 78, two strokes off the medalist’s score, and earned him his second consecutive all league honors. Peter King had a difficult finish on the toughest hole on the course (we used what is called a “shotgun start” to speed up play, which means everyone starts at the same time just on different holes) and he shot a very solid round of 84 to finish second for Landon . While his score was only one stroke behind the All-IAC line of 83, and he is certainly disappointed, nonetheless his day was very good in those conditions and without him playing this well, we would be facing Bullis in that playoff round. Kudos to Peter and West. Charlie Bundy was next for the Bears with a steady 85, and Stuart Powell and Johnny Muller had a really cold start and a strong finish and vice versa to end the day with 87’s. Jonathan Caplan, our final starter, had a very tough time with the tricky greens today and his score did not factor into the match.
Final team totals: Prep clinches at least a share of the title, shooting a team score of 386. Landon in second with 421. Bullis third with 423. EHS fourth with 434. Sssa fifth with 481. STA sixth with 491.
For the first time in recent memory, the Landon Golf team competed in a 10 v 10 match today against Archbishop Spaulding. Usually our matches are 6 v 6 with each team counting their best 5 scores, but when we go on the road for non-league matches the format can change, and today we tested our team’s depth (their coach wanted to count the best 7 scores). We had a couple of our top guys nursing some nagging injuries, but everyone played and finished and the Bears prevailed, winning 293-317. Quality win on a course which played a lot harder than it looked.
Low score for the day for both teams belonged to Steven Samit, who shot a varsity career best 39. Charlie Bundy and Stuart Powell continued their stretch of solid play, each shooting a 41. West Shaw and Jonathan Caplan both shot 42, followed by Johnny Muller’s 43 and 45 by Vernon Holleman and Bruce Han. Peter Qiu finished with a 47 and Peter King carded a 48.
The day was beautiful, and we were glad to come away with the win. Your Bears are now 7-0, 4-0 in the IAC
