Special Tribute to Mac Jacoby
Architects rarely allow their structural elements to be seen; maybe they consider the steel beams not that interesting. Schools have beams, too. There are traditions and people keeping the institution strong and its principles sound.
Mac Jacoby is one of Landon’s structural beams. He has been an essential member of the faculty as a teacher, mentor and coach for 62 years.
In front of classrooms, the essentials of mathematics were learned from this special educator.
For many, many years Landon’s tennis teams have earned an inordinate number of IAC titles and an exemplary list of national championships.
Current students and alumni are seen spending important moments with Mr. Jacoby. His advice on major decisions are highly valued by generations of Bears.
The Jacoby approach was to excel at these tasks and to do so without any fanfare.
Few of these events get much publicity; Mac is a modest man who derives great satisfaction from his educational role. He held the difficult job of Middle School headmaster. Those are years in which Bears have been known to incur growing pains. Rather than let a little behavioral aberration grow, Mr. Jacoby would appear in the halls and quietly encourage change. Equally trying is the Middle School education manager and carefully guided the careers of decades of teachers.
In the last few years, Mr. Jacoby has made Bear athletics run. One would think that referees appeared magically on the right field at the right time. Landon sports team play games all over the DMV and beyond; again, to the casual observer, those Brown and White buses must have on board computers that move them to the pick-up points. Football and basketball are number intensive sports. Yards, rushes, punts, 3 point shots, rebounds, assists and the like give definition to the boys’ performances. As of yet there is no artificial intelligence able to capture and compile all of these numbers.
All of these are thankless jobs which are essential to the functioning of Landon Athletics. Mac does them so well that no one ever has reason to know whose responsibilities they are.
Mac is one of the structural members of Landon. His excellence has contributed to the school’s success as measured by the many Bears who appreciate all that Mr. Jacoby added to their years within the White Rocks.
HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, MAC.

Baseball (11-3-2)
by Steven Davidson
The baseball team continued its hot start to the season, picking up four wins in a busy week. The Bears bookended lopsided non-conference, wins over The Heights and Sidwell with two IAC wins over St. Stephens/St. Agnes. They ran their record to 11-3-2, including scrimmages and pre-season games.
Landon began the week on Monday with a shortened, “mercy rule” game against the Heights. Jed Rosenberg went all five innings to lead the Bears to an 11-1 victory.
The Bears then opened their IAC play on Tuesday with an 8-3 victory over St. Stephens. Pitchers Randy Bednar and Will Barufka combined for the win.
The Saints visited Landon on Wednesday to complete the two-game series. Landon jumped out to a big lead, only to see St. Stephens score seven runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead, 13-12. The Bears tied it up in the bottom of the seventh, then won the game in the bottom of the 8th with a walk off single from junior Xander DeNovio. Pitchers DeNovio, Ryan Fruehwirth, Jake Davidson and Louie Eisen led the Bears
On Saturday, the Bears completed their undefeated week with another “mercy rule” win, crushing Sidwell, 13-2, in 5 innings. Senior Scott Prutting had 5 RBI in the first inning alone, smacking a 3-run homer well over the left field fence in his first at bat. Sophomores Will O’Shea, Dane Camphausen and Barufka each contributed multiple hits and RBI, senior stalwart Bednar sparked the attack with his aggressive base running. Pitchers Rosenberg, Zach Werhan, and Davidson stymied the Quakers.
Next up for the Bears is an important two-game series against the team Landon bested in the IAC championship game last year, Bullis. Landon hosts Bullis on Monday, then travels to Potomac on Thursday to face the Panthers.

Lacrosse
Bears are 8-0 with wins over previously undefeated Severn 11-5 and IAC foe SSSA 16-11. Both were big wins. Not a fan of polls (how can you compare a team from Long Island with a team in California); so, there are no links to sites with DMV or national rankings.
Rugby
Landon’s JV side played well and beat St.John’s JV 21-5.
On Wednesday Landon Varsity in a MAVRC DII league game beat Model School for the Deaf team 73-0.
Tennis
From Coach Miller
Bears Tennis is off to a 4-0 start. We opened the season with a 7-0 win vs Gonzaga. We then beat Whitman in a tightly contested 4-3 scrimmage. Two easy wins against Episcopal and McDonogh leave us at 4-0. We are led by 2 sophomores at #1 and #2 (Sachin Das, Rodrigo Pedrosa) and a freshman at #3 (Cyrus Rahbaran).
