INSIDE THE WHITE ROCKS

  • Varsity Baseball – (1-2) all games were in wind, snow, sleet and wind chills in the 20s! The Varsity baseball team started its season after two weeks of successful scrimmages.  Coach Bill Reed hopes to build on the team’s second place IAC finish in 2017 and IAC championships in 2015 and 2016.  The Bears will have to replace some stalwart seniors, including Randy Bednar — 2017 IAC player of the year– now starting for the University of Maryland.  But, the Bears have three returning seniors, six returning juniors and six new varsity players to lead the club.

The Bears lost to Baltimore powerhouse Archbishop Curley and to Gonzaga before rebounding with a win Saturday over Sidwell.

In the Sidwell game, senior Xander DeNovio pitched six innings of no-hit ball in the Bears’ 8-2 triumph.  Sophomore Jack Cope paced the attack with 5 RBI and junior Dane Camphausen contributed two doubles.

Earlier in the week, senior Ryan Fruewirth and juniors Jed Rosenberg and Will O’Shea pitched against Curley.  Senior Zach Werhan and juniors Jake Davidson and Will Barufka pitched against Gonzaga.  Junior catcher Kit Dziak threw out two potential base stealers against Gonzaga.  The Bears staged a late inning rally against Gonzaga but came up just short in a 7-5 loss.

Notes:  Solid first win of the season for the Bears in some pretty cold, windy conditions on a course that plays tough on the best of days.  Johnny Muller continued to pace the Bears with a 39, staying within 2 strokes of GC’s #1, All-WCAC player, Brandon Keller.  West Shaw and Charlie Bundy put down solid rounds to keep it close through the first two pairings.  The match turned in the Bears’ favor when Stuart Powell carded his season best score of 41, which included 3 pars and a birdie for the day.  Steven Samit and Peter King brought it home by outplaying their two GC opponents by 7 strokes.  In the words of Coach Reed, “There was much rejoicing” … and shivering.

Record stands at 1-0.
