First match of the season: the Bears hit the links at Bretton Woods, on a breezy day yesterday to face a solidMcDonoghteam, who was coming off a solid win in their opening match the day before.  We played the MIAA Match Play Format, which is pretty cool. …

John Bates and Charlie Lynn, our returning All-Met’s, took on their top-2 players and provided the start we needed, with John closing out all 3 points, Charlie getting 2.5, and Landon winning the best ball point.  With five birdies on the card scattered between them over the ten holes, this was a strong effort.  Landon 6.5 McDonogh 0.5

Freshmen Will LeBlanc and Paul Baier took on #3-4.  A fellow freshman, Will’s opponent had actually competed against him in some summer tourneys before.  With a solid start from both our young bucks in their first HS match, we took the early points (Paul won the first 5 holes!).  In the second half, Will’s opponent had a good par to even the match through 7, but on the 8th hole a double dog-leg (lots of turns) par-5, Will clipped a tree with his drive.  However it was still out there far enough to give him a shot at a pretty tough to reach green.  Will hit his 230 yard second shot to 10’ and calmly rolled in his first EAGLE in a Landon match.  He would win the next hole to close out the 2nd and 3rd pt of his match.  Paul’s opponent rallied well and won their first outright point of the match on the 2nd 5.  Landon wins the 10 hole points and the best ball point.   Second group:  Landon 6 McDonogh 1;  Overall Landon 12.5 McDonogh 1.5

3rd group was Charlie Burr and Mark Evans.  Charlie and his opponent played back and forth the whole match, with Charlie making two big putts in a row to halve the first 5 holes and start the second 5.  They would end up tied for all three points.  Mark’s opponent was solid and he did a pretty good job of capitalizing on any openings he was given.  He won all three points against Mark.  Mark and Charlie both struggled with their short putts, and that was the difference in this pairing.  Third group:  Landon 1.5 McDonogh 5.5; Overall Landon 14 McDonogh 7

4th group matched up Griffin Lugar in his first Varsity start and our 3rd Freshman Owen Moore.Grifiin out of the gate made a strong statement, with a birdie on the first hole.  He would go on to win the first 4 holes.  His opponent rallied nicely after that blitz, and he made a great par on the last hole to halve the second half of the match. But Griffin was too solid all day, and won the overall as well! Owen showed some real mental toughness in the first 5 holes, when his guy made a very tough par on 1, Owen responded with one of his own on two to square the match.  Owen missed his par putt on 3 only to see his opponent jar his in. Down 1 two to go.  Owen proceeded to take care of both of them to win the first 5.  In a similar fashion, Owen’s opponent wins the 7th hole to take a 1 hole lead with two to go.  This time Owen wanted a little more drama in the finish.  On the same hole Will LeBlanc eagled earlier, Owen chipped it in the cup for the incredibly rare second Landon eagle on the same hole in the same match!  This also closed out the best ball point too.  He would proceed to bring it home on the final hole and win all 3 points.    Landon 6.5 McDonogh 0.5                Final Score Landon 20.5 McDonogh 7.5       IT WAS A GOOD DAY!

  • LACROSSE Coach McGettigan’s young squad were able to defeat the Cavaliers of The Heights 7-5 based on tenacity and an all field game. Next the Purple Eagles home on Tuesday

  • TENNIS Coach Miller’s men of the nets get it started right beating SPS 5-2

but not so good against Wootton 1-6

TRACK Coach Gagnon heads to SSSA 3/15

Rugby New Coach Tyler brings experience of college club scrums to a band of Bears who have shown a trend of year-over-year improvements. They had a match against Good Counsel, but no results posted yet.

Winter Sports

Over 10 years of following Bear sports, subject to a diminishing memory, this may be the first season where Landon athletes achieved the IAC Player of the Year Awards in three major sports-

Lest we forget, a Bear was the IAC and WaPo soccer players of the year. Scored his first MLS goal before graduation from Landon

The season is not complete for one Landon player

Tyler has been honored with an invitation to the prestigious Capital Classic, the nation’s most legendary high school basketball All-American game (Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00PM at the Events DC Entertainment & Sports Arena) [tickets
