    • History continues to be made by this Bears wrestling team! We had another phenomenal weekend.  As a team we place 6th out of 30 teams.  This is the highest team finish in Bear history in the Maryland Independent State tournament. The last highest place was 7th in 2001 with 6 place winners. We had 7 place winners which is the highest in school history. Finally, after having 10 State finalists, Landon has its first State Champion. This year, every wrestler contributed to the team finish.

Patrick Townsend (106) hit the #1 seed right off the bat (for the second year in a row) and was eliminated from the tournament.

At 120, Axel Giron lived up to his seed and took 3rd in one of the toughest weights in the tournament.  He wrestled several close hard fought battles and went 5-1.  His only loss was 7-2 to the eventual champion.

At 126, Lorenzo Lopez makes school history by going 5-0 and becoming Landon’s first STATE CHAMPION.  He battled every second of the final match to hang on to a 4-2 lead.

At 132, Patrick Kielb placed for the second year in a row.  He went 2-3 to take 8th place.

At 138, Matt Amitay went 1-2 and was one round away from the top 8.

At 145, Senior Captain Brendon Gallagher became Landon’s only 2x State finalist. He had a heartbreaking loss with a takedown in the last 15 second for the tie and then lost in overtime.  Brendon went 4-1 for the weekend and second place.  He hopes to place for the second time at Nationals next weekend.

At 160, Jonny Gherman went 2-2 and lost one round away from the top 8.

At 170, Jelani Machen lost a tough match in the semi-finals to the eventual champion but wrestled back to 4th place.  This is the second year Jelani has place in the top 6.  He went 3-2 for the weekend and has qualified for Nationals.

At 182, Senior Carter Johnson went 4-2 for the weekend and placed 7th.  This was also the second year in a row to place at states.

At 195, Senior Joel Desroches went 2-3 to take 8th place.

At 220, Nick Haller (yes, Nick took one for the team and bumped up) wrestled the best he has ever wrestled and went 2-1.  He was one round away from placing.  He won his first match in the Ultimate tie breaker. He won his last match ever 11-5. At 285,

Terrance Bridgers had a tough tournament.  He did not get seeded and drew the 3rd seed in the first round.  T had his opponent on his back at one point and almost had the upset of the tournament, but eventually he fell to his opponent.  He lost a second battle in the wrestle backs where again he had his opponent on his back, but never got the pin call.

Our goal was to break the top 5 in the team standings, but we fell short by 14.5 points. Congratulations to the all the Bear wrestlers.  This season has been amazing.  We will end the season next week with Axel, Lorenzo, Brendon, and Jelani representing Landon at the National tournament at Lehigh University.
