The Landon athletic community lost an important contributor to the family culture within the White Rocks, Nancy Davis, wife of Lowell Davis. Anyone attending any school event quickly experienced the warmth of this lady. She knew everyone, and her presence made you feel appreciated. Nancy was a highly regarded teacher, an avid tennis player, a very proud grandmother and a loving wife. She will be missed by all.

from Coach Katz

  • It was a quick night and one step closer to the IAC title.  The Saints had 8 weight classes filled and one of them was 285 where we did not have a wrestler.  We won 4 of the 7 matches wrestled.  We also double forfeited at two weight classes because we sent a squad to a jamboree tonight as well to get more mat time.  Patrick Townsend, Axel Giron, Jelani Machen, and Nick Haller all received forfeits.  At 132 & 138, Lorenzo Lopez and Luc Schermer both pinned their opponents at the same time: 3:19.  At 152 & 160, Brendon Gallagher and Jonny Gherman both pinned their wrestlers in the first period.  Matt Amitay, Joel Desroches, and Carter Johnson unfortunately lost tough matches.   Final Score: Landon 48 SSSA 16.

What an exciting night and an excellent way to end our dual meet season.  The team ended up 16-5 which is the highest number of wins of any team in history at Landon. The record was 15 wins which was achieved in 2005, 2006 (the last time we won a piece of the title), and 2017.  All five of the matches we lost came down to one match.  We still have yet to have a healthy full line up.  Hopefully, we will peak at the State championship in 3 weekends.

Our first score tonight was a 63-18 win over Episcopal. With that team win, we have guaranteed at least a piece of the title by going 5-0.  We can earn the title outright with a tournament win next weekend at St Albans for the IAC championships.  Of the 42 matches on the evening, we lost 5 matches in head to head and 4 matches to forfeits.

The EHS match started at 170 where Jelani Machen started us off on the right foot with a pin in less than a minute.  We lost at 182 by pin to make the match 6-6.  Then the Bears started rolling and never looked back.  We earned 2 forfeits at 195 and 220.  At 285, Terrance Bridgers finally got back into the line-up.  He pinned his guy in about a minute in epic fashion.  He did a shoulder throw and had the Episcopal fly through the air with his feet almost hitting the ceiling. At 106, Patrick Townsend fought a battle and ended it with a pin with about 45 seconds left in the match.  Giron 120, Lopez 126, and Luc Schermer 132, all pinned quickly.  Matt Amitay won 8-1 at 138.  Brendon Gallagher got a forfeit at 152 and Jerrold Johnson ended the match will a first period pin.

  • In the second match, we had pins from Nick Haller 182, Carter Johnson 220, Lorenzo Lopez 126, Luc Schermer 132, Matt Amitay 138, and Brendon Gallagher The most exciting match of this dual was Jelani Machen (#14 in State, #8 in privates).  He avenged 2 losses from last year with an impressive 12-5 victory over the #10 ranked wrestler in Maryland, and #5 in private schools.  Final score: Landon 63- St. James 18.

  • In the third match, we won 4 of the five matches.  Axel Giron 120 pinned his man, Jonny Gherman 160 majored his opponent 14-5, and Nick Haller won 2-0. Jelani Machen had another amazing match against the #9 in State and #4 in Privates.  The match came down to the last 20 second when Jelani earned the final takedown for a 6-3 victory.  Jelani stepped up to the challenge and came out on top.  Jelani improves his record to 25-1 for the season.  That’s a Bear! Final Score: Landon 58 Severn 18

  • Thanks to Jake Kowitz for stepping up to 145 and filling the spot.  Although he went 1-2, he did an excellent job and supported his team.  Thanks to Jalen Williams for helping out to fill the weights up top.  He came out for wrestling less than two weeks ago and is already helping the team.  Jerrold Johnson also stepped in on a varsity match and earned a pin. Christian Thomas got an exhibition match at 126 and pinned his guy in the first period.

  • Townsend 3-0, 15-13 overall

  • Giron 3-0, 30-6 overall

  • Lopez 3-0, 29-3 overall

  • Luc Schermer 3-0, 17-10 overall

  • Amitay 2-1, 21-13 overall

  • Brendon Gallagher 3-0, 26-4 overall

  • Machen 3-0, 25-1 overall

  • Haller 2-1, 9-11 overall

  • Carter Johnson 3-0, 12-4 overall

  • Bridgers 3-0, 3-0 overall

  • Jerrold Johnson 1-0, 7-5 overall

  • Jonny Gherman 2-0, 19-11 overall

D-I

NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse kicks off the first weekend in February.  Spring seems to start earlier each year.  This year we will be tracking 15 teams and 21 Landon Alums in D-I play.  New to coverage this year: Army (Drennan Green), Penn State (Nate Buller), Maryland (Justin Shockey), Michigan (Will Amoroso), and Saint Joseph’s (Thomas Halm).  For 2018, we will cover 174 regular seasons contests (25 of which are Bears vs. Bears games) plus all the post season action.

If you want to go see Landon alums play in person, but stay close to home, in addition to the home schedules of Johns Hopkins, Navy, and Maryland, the following games will be in the area:

March 3: Jacksonville vs. Vermont in Severn, Maryland (site and time not yet available)

March 6: Navy vs. Penn, US Lacrosse’s Tierney Field in Sparks, MD @ 7PM

March 10: Penn State vs. Cornell (Bears vs. Bears!), US Lacrosse’s Tierney Field in Sparks, MD @ Noon

                    Hobart at Georgetown @ Noon

March 24: Bucknell at Loyola @ 1PM

Here’s who we are following this year:

Army: Drennan Green

Bucknell: Sean O’Brien, Jarett Witzal, and Colin O’Brien

Cleveland State: Justin Conner

D-III

D-III Men’s also gets going the first weekend in February as Salisbury (Brian Menendez) faces Hampden-Sydney on February 4.  This season we will be following 6 teams with Landon alums—5 players and 2 assistant coaches, with a total of 96 regular season games, four of which are Bears vs. Bears matches.  There is a strong local flavor to half the teams we follow—Catholic, Marymount and Salisbury along with more dispersed representation from Ohio Wesleyan, Tufts, and Trinity.  Tufts and Salisbury have become fixtures in the later stages of the D-III tournament each year while Ohio Wesleyan is a consistent top-20 competitor that plays a challenging schedule each year.

Here’s who we are following this year:

Catholic University of America: Assistant Coach Tom Minkler, Sean Feldman

Marymount: Assistant Coach Wes Lincoln

Ohio Wesleyan: Tyler McTague

Salisbury: Brian Menendez

Trinity: Spud Dunn

Tufts: Luke Kurtz

In the preseason polls, Salisbury is ranked #1 in the USILA Coaches’ poll and #3 in the US Lacrosse/Nike poll and Tufts is slotted #8 in both.

Over the last 15 seasons, Salisbury has won the NCAA D-III tournament nine times in twelve appearances in the championship game.  Tufts has emerged over the past few years as a serious thorn in Salisbury’s side, with three titles since 2010 in five championship game appearances.

Final Note:

Although we don’t cover them, the US Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) will play Bullis in Potomac on March 9.  2017 Landon grads and Navy recruits Cam Jones and Shane Corcoran will be there.

This edition does not include its normal set of images to reflect the more somber mood of the Bear community,

There are pictures of individuals because Nancy was a big fan of seeing her Bears.
