  • Winter Sports

  • Varsity Basketball (4-9)

  • Varsity Ice Hockey(11-2) #4 per WaPo

  • Varsity Indoor Track and Field 1/12 Maroon & Black Relays

  • Varsity Swimming and Diving 1/12 Our Lady of Good Counsel High School

  • Varsity Wrestlingfrom Coach Katz

  • We have finally broken the streak!

    • Congratulations to this Senior class: Luc Schermer, Brendon Gallagher, Brett Gallagher, Nick Haller, Joel Desroches, and Carter Johnson.  They have led this team to where it is.  It has been 13 years since we have beaten Prep in a dual meet, and we did it in a convincing way.

      • The match started at 160 where Jonny Gherman stuck it to his Prep opponent in 3:41 seconds.

      • Jelani Machen was next.  He earned a major decision by the score of 13-1.

      • Nick Haller received a forfeit at 184.

      • Joel Desroches fought a tough battle against a state ranked wrestler at 195.

      • Carter Johnson (195) put us right back on our winning ways with a pin in the first period.

    • The team score was 22-6.  Prep battled back into the match by winning 3 big wins to actually take the lead 24-22.  No fear because we are now in the heart of our line-up.

      • They forfeited to our three hammers: Axel Giron (120), Lorenzo Lopez (126), and Patrick Kielb (132), to put us back in the lead for good.

      • At 138, Matt Amitay hung tough against a state ranked wrestler and held the score to 8-0.

      • Captain Brendon Gallagher (145) and Marc Schermer (152) ended the match with two pins in the first period.  It was a good win, and it felt satisfying to do it their room.

      • In our second match against Woodberry, we won 61-15.  We wrestled better than the first match and started to build some momentum. While we received 5 forfeits, we won 6 of the 8 remaining matches.

      • The following wrestlers earned forfeits: Nick Haller (182), Joel Desroches (220), Christian Thomas (126), Luc Schermer (138), and Matt Amitay (145).  Carter Johnson (195), Axel Giron (120), and Lorenzo Lopez (132) all earned pins.

      • Jelani Machen won his match 12-5 (one of his closest matches to date).

      • Brendon Gallagher and Jonny Gherman both dominated their opponents and earned technical falls (15-0 and 18-3, respectively).  Brendon’s opponent was ranked in the Virginia Prep states.

    • In our last match, we thumped Pallotti (who actually beat the other two teams).  We matched well against them and won 74-6. There were several exciting matches.  We lost the first match at 182 against a tough opponent, but then did not lose a match the rest of the time. At 195, Joel Desroches reversed his opponent to his back and ended the match even though he was losing by points. At 220, Carter Johnson earned a takedown with 6 seconds left in the overtime period. At 113, Patrick Townsend wrestled his best match of the year and pinned his guy in the third period. At 120 (Axel Giron), 126 (Lorenzo Lopez), 138 (Matt Amitay), 152 (Marc Schermer), 160 (Jonny Gherman), and 170 (Jelani Machen), each pinned his wrestler in the first period.  At 145, Brendon Gallagher continued his dominance on another top ranked wrestler in the state with another technical fall (19-3).  Eric Cao (285), Nate Zola (106), and Luc Schermer all received forfeits.

  • It was a good night for the Bears.  Thank you to all those who came to watch.  We had several alumni show to support the team: Austin Sanders ’05, Matt Gunther’96, Ben Goodfriend ’16, and Connor Cassidy ’06.

  • Next week, we will face a solid Albans team at home. They gave us trouble last year so we need to be ready for them.  We will also wrestle a tough Gilman team and a good Gonzaga team.  The STA match will start at 5 pm on Friday in the new gym.
