Ice Hockey (5-5-1) Returning to DMV, the Bears faced MAPHL’s #1 and #4 scoring teams and shut them out for 99 minutes out of the 102 of playing time. First, against a very talented O’Connell team (with two of the league’s top 10 scorers), Ty Morton (35 saves) shut out the Knights in a 3-0 game. Bear Goals: Cole Gibson, Owen Concannon (a: Chris Morris, Cole), Will Jarrett (a: Jack Jarrett, Nico Kenary).

On Friday against the WaPo and MAPHL #1 team, DeMatha, the Bears beat the Stags 3-2; scores by Ryan Giles(a: Cole ,Nico), Owen (a: Nicolas Khramtsov, Jake Davidson) and Chris Morris (a: Spencer Davis). Ty had 38 saves. The Bear D Cullen Stout, Drew Wellington, Jack Jarrett and Ethan Weinstein (with 2 defensemen injured!) held the Stags to no goals up until the visitors had to deal with a 5 minute, unreleasable penalty; they restrained the potent DM offense for all but 4:21 of the disadvantage. The home team’s 2nd goal benefitted from their pulling of their goalie.

Swimming and Diving – Defending champion Landon School took home the boys’ title with 361 points the ninth annual Erik Meineilschmidt Pentathlon, hosted by St. Maria Goretti. “They just love the whole meet, the purpose of it and they always try to do their best.” The pentathlon is a unique event in which every swimmer competes in all five disciplines contested (100-yard butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley). Landon’s Jerry Lu was second with 82 points, winning the breaststroke (1:02.60), while teammate Jacob Rosner was third with 80 points. Landon was represented by 17 boys who trekked up to Hagerstown. Other excellent performances were from Ramin Zareshan, Michael Yan, Max Peraza, Conor Durbin, Ryan Patterson,John PoperaArmen Sivaslian, and Ade Jones.

Interesting footnote: Erik Meineilschmidt was a good friend of Coach Bartman, competitor, and excellent coach. His father Ray was the Bears’ high school coach.

Wrestling from Coach Katz — The wrestling team had along but successful night at the BCC duals. The night started off with a 45-30 victory over IAC rival Bullis. The Bears are back on top after losing to them the last two years. The Bears lost two close matches to two tough teams. We lost 44-36 to Parkdale, the toughest team in PG county. The other loss came to host BCC 36-33

Coach Katz added the following comments:

While the Bears only won 2 of their 5 matches, they wrestled tough against some top competition. As a young team (6 of the 14 weights are freshmen or sophomores, and only 2 seniors), the Bears are on the edge of breaking into the next level.  Several coaches commented to me how tough our boys were  on the mat this weekend.

Individually, many Bears had some big wins against some top competition.

106 Patrick Kielb went 4-1 (his only loss was to a ranked wrestler from Parkdale)  Patrick is now an Honorable Mention in the State Rankings
