Beast of the East
Six Bears traveled to the University of Delaware for the Nationally renowned Beast of the East tournament. It attracts the top wrestlers from across the country to compete at the highest level. Our wrestlers performed well. While some did not earn any wins, they did their best and gained invaluable experience for the future, as this tournament helps prepare for the Prep National tournament in February.
At 106, freshman Joe Papalia lost to tough matches to solid opponents. At 120, Junior James Hanley hit the 5th seed in the first round. In the consolations, he lost 8-2 to an opponent that went on to win 4 more matches, but did not place. At 138, Senior Joel Brown made Landon history. Amazingly he did not get seeded in a tough weight (returning National Prep Place winner and 2x State Champ), but drew the second seed in the first round. Unfortunately, he lost a tough battle to a Virginia Tech recruit and #12 ranked in the country. Joel then battled back through the consolations and rattled off 8 straight wins to make the consolation finals. Who did he meet again? The guy he wrestled in the first round. Joel was determined to get revenge, but it was not meant to be as he took 4th. Joel is the first place winner at the Beast in Landon History. At 165, Junior Nate Furgeson had an excellent tournament. He knocked off the #13 seed in the first round, pinned his opponent in the second round, and fell to the 4th seed in the third round. In the wrestle backs, he lost to the #5 ranked wrestler in MD from Gilman. At 215, Sophomore Tiller Smith lost a close match to a tough PA wrestler from Saucon Valley. He then pinned in the first round of the consolations, but then ran into #6 seed and Ray Oliver Champ form Delaware Military Academy. At 285, Senior Ty Reyes lost two tough battles to large opponents. As heavy weight goes, bit matches were 50/50 from the beginning, unfortunately, Ty did not come out on top.
Next week, we travel to Damascus for their holiday tournament. There will be 36 State ranked wrestlers entered into the tournament. Unfortunately, we will not be at full strength. We lost returning state champ Will Levy (144) to a torn labrum in his shoulder. He will be getting it repaired over the winter break. We will also be missing a few other starters due to traveling for the holidays.
