WINTER PREVIEW by Coach Katz

Landon Wrestling 2022-23 Season Preview

It is hard to believe the season is here.  After an amazing year last season (IAC Champs and 9-0 in duals), the Bears are excited to get back on the mat.  We lost two Seniors, but return the majority of team and they are ready to continue to raise the bar for Landon Wrestling in the Washington Metropolitan Area and the State.  We have 60 students (the biggest roster I have ever had was about 44) sign up for the team this year and we will have depth that we have never had before.  Some of our wrestle offs will be better than some IAC finals matches.  I cannot include everyone on this preview, but I will try to give you an ideal of our depth.  It is worth noting that the weights have changed for the coming season.

106-      Joe Papalia (Fr)– new freshman, but comes in with excellent experience with one of the toughest youth clubs in Maryland, Head Hunters.  He has the potential to be a high place winner at States.

113-      Theo Shockey (So)-  13-10 last year, took 3rd IAC and 4th at Mad Mats.  He worked hard over the summer and he has improved significantly

Makana Neverosky (Fr)- one of the top middle school wrestlers last year.

120-       James Hanley (Jr)- 28-12 transferred from St. Johns.  He won the DC Championships and was a national qualifier.  He is another Head Hunter product and has great success in the off-season in National level events, including going 7-0 at a recent elite dual tournament.

Kendall Buford (Fr)- Earned a spot as a freshman on the IAC Championship Soccer team this fall.  He is very athletic and strong.

Sam Bynum (Fr) –  a good middle school wrestler

126-      Seamus McNamara (Jr)– 7-10 last year, took 2nd IAC, 6th at Mad Mats

Colt Happ (Fr)– tough middle school wrestler.

J Ngugi (Fr)– another tough competitor from Middle school

132       Joel Brown (Sr) 113-15 for career, verbally committed to West Point. 2x State champ, 3rd Prep Nationals last year, has beaten some top 20 wrestlers over the summer and fall.

James Chambers (Jr)-  returning JV wrestler from last year. Won the St. James JV tournament

Louis McNamara (Fr)- another Middle School wrestler, brother of Seamus.

Robert Swift (Fr)- another solid middle school wrestler

138       Conrad Brady (Sr)- 8-6 last year, 4th at Mad Mats 4th in IAC

Ryan Zand (Fr)- tough Middle School wrestler

144       Will Levy (Jr)- 25-3 last year. Mad Mats Champ, IAC Champ, and returning State champ (OW of States

Dylan Bradford (Sr)- tough returning JV wrestler who went 5-0

Anthony Akwara (So)- tough JV wrestler last year 13-7.  Won IAC Varsity B and St. James tournament

150       Hugh Neill (Jr)- tough JV wrestler last year 13-7. 3rd Maryland JV States

Kedren Smith (Fr)- tough Middle School wrestler

157       Nico Biabani (Sr) -12-7 last year- IAC Varsity B Champ

165       Dean Farber (Jr)- tough JV wrestler from last year 15-1. Won IAC Varsity B, St. James JV, took 2nd at Montgomery Blair JV tournament
