FOOTBALL (3-1)

The Bears played their toughest opponent so far (maybe the season?) in the BIG, TALL and TALENTED Haverford school. A couple of misplays by the Bears contributed to the visitors substantial lead(21-0) with 8:20 left in Q2. A pair of Nathan Rosner to Hunter Taylor passes reenergized the home team and then a 46 yard run—through multiple attempted ‘Ford tackles- by Aaron Best  got the team on the scoreboard @ 3:01 of Q2. The 3rd and most of the last period were defensive battles (with more than a few penalties). With 2 minutes left in the game, Nathan Furgeson connected on 6 passes (Taylor Best, Carter Phillips, Hunter and Jackson Knox) with Jackson scoring @ 0:45.8. The Bears’ determination in fighting back against the PA team was a sign of the team’s unity and a harbinger of future wins.

SOCCER (4-1-2)

  •  From Coach Reed –the Bears  won big against SSSA  everyone played, nobody got hurt.  Zac Osmond opened his account this season when he got on the end of a cross from Kris Fletcher, who had broken free down the left wing, shook a defender, and cut into the penalty box, 1 – 0 in the 3:00.  About ten minutes later, Moses Fishman, who is having a monster season, picked up the ball in the circle and headed straight north, drawing defenders.  Fletch cut in from the left, tic tac toe, 2 – 0.

We came out for the second half and Fish did essentially the exact same thing, this time finding Conrad Brady, who finished neatly in the 42:00, 3 – 0.  Fletch finished off the scoring when he closed down their centerback, who was being a bit too casual with the ball, stripped him of the ball in the middle of the circle, carried the ball alone for 40+ yards, and iced things, 4 – 0 in the 63:00.  We immediately emptied the bench.

Vincent Ingram stepped into the proverbial phone booth in a suit and came out with a big S on his chest.  He’s been building all season and today was a good outing for him on the wing.  He’ll be a part of things down the line.  Tom Trowern also stood out, getting minutes in both halves, also on the wing.

        Georgetown Prep (3-0-4)

  • Big win, raucous crowd, and an electric atmosphere on Prindle today.  Prep came in undefeated, but with several ties.  We came in on the heels of a three-game, ten-goal winning streak.  Prep were characteristically big and athletic.   The first half saw few chances for either team and  frankly, not much attractive soccer.  0-0 at the half.  We got a bit better in the second half, but not enough.  Prep clipped the ball over the top into our box, we failed to clear effectively, and the ball rattled straight to Prep’s winger, 0-1 in the 70:00.  We immediately pulled Art Keys from the back line and put him at forward next to Fletch.  Then things got nutty.

Three minutes later Nico Schermer cleared a a ball to Ben Ellwood, won a 50-50 ball, headed it to Fletch, who drove to goal and fed Art for the finish, 1-1 in the 7:30.  A few minutes later Fletch caught their centerback from behind, stripped the ball, scored.  Unreal.  During injury time, Conrad Brady, Ben and Kris dribbled into the corner and played keep away from Prep players, earning several throwing and corner kicks. It’s called choking the game out.

A Prep player nipped in, cleared the ball, only to have Moses Fishman win the knockdown and play a thirty yard pass go Zac Osmond, who iced the game.  All of the above happened in about eight minutes.  Pure insanity.  0-1 down to 3-1 win in under ten minutes.  Outstanding.

Art, Nico, and Dylan Thiess were excellent across the back line and Carlos Febles had their best games in a Landon jersey.  2-0 and in first place, for now.
