BearSportsNews Sunday catches up on all varsity sports and captures the alumni at colleges and the pros. The information available within and beyond the White Rocks varies based on what coaches and colleges provide; sometimes there may be better sources than the obvious sources. Please share at sandy_murdock@yahoo.com any links or sites AND ABSOLUTELY LET ME KNOW ABOUT ANY ERROR. BSN is a one Bear effort and mistakes have occurred and immediately corrected not even with any angst- if nothing else such requests to eradicate a wrong play, date, player, etc. shows the readers actually look at these pages. INSIDE THE WHITE ROCKS

Football (1-1) beat MIAA A opponent, the Bears scored 2 D TDs to win 27-6. Next week Maret
Soccer (2-1) beat WCAC perennial top team DeMatha 2-0 and Gilman
Win on Prindle Field against a competitive, feisty group from DeMatha. If you came out and saw the first half, you would have been nonplussed. Both teams picked up yellow card bookings in the final minute of the half, which spiced things up a bit. The second half was far more entertaining, we played better and scored twice. In the 51:00, forward Art Keys cashed in on a miscue from their GK on a failed clearance. Art still had to finish cleanly, which he did, 1 – 0. The goal opened up the game as DeMatha threw numbers forward to try and level the score. In the 75:00, Art picked up the ball moving left to right across the top of the penalty area, turned the corner on his marker and drove at the goal. Junior Jackson Tewksbury glided in from the back post to finish Art’s cross, 2 – 0.
The headline story today was our GK, Andreas Geffert. Last year Geff was a reserve GK behind Will Single and knew he had to hold off a few challengers for the open spot this summer and preseason. We added Will Thayer to the coaching group in the varsity team as a GK-specific coach, given his extensive background. The cause/effect on all three GKs, but particularly Geff, has been clear and immediate. He made five saves and all were moments when he had to be brave, decisive and composed, especially when a sprinkle of rain made things dicey. Give Geff a clap on the back; his performance today was not a coincidence.
Otherwise, we have many of the usual suspects from last year’s team back in the first eleven: Tom Trowern, Dylan Thiess, Amos Steinglass and Nico Schermer are the backline. Conrad Brady, Moses Fishman run the midfield, with a rotation of players. Nick Della Rocca and Vince Ingram play on the edges and Art Keys typically plays up front. There are a few exciting newcomers who will contribute immediately. Freshman Kendall Buford and new-to-Landon junior Masai Gordon are consistently playing well and juniors Jackson Tewksbury and Manif Jaffa have recently climbed up the ladder.
Thanks for coming out today for those of you who braved the weather, and special thanks to Bill Z. for taking the scoreboard/game clock duty on short notice. He’s been a bit of a rabbit’s foot for us over the last few seasons.
Similar, but better, outing v Gilman. 2 – 0 was the same score line of our previous game, but we laid down a much more attractive brand of soccer, to the tune of 65 – 70% possession.Moses Fishman and Conrad Brady were outstanding in the middle of the field, spraying the ball all over the field and containing Gilman’s fancy Louisville – committed center midfielder. Schermer, Thiess, Steinglass and Trowern went the distance in the back and Geffert hung his second consecutive clean sheet. Art Keys and Jackson Tewksbury rotated at forward and Nick Della Rocca and Vince Ingram earned starts on the wings. 0 – 0 at the half, with several chances for us and one nervy moment where we almost gifted them a goal, the game had the feel of one that could easily slip away if we got complacent, and satisfied, just knocking it around the field. It was still scoreless until the 66:00, and both teams had players booked on yellow cards, when we drew a corner kick and Conrad laced a beauty into the mixer that Dylan managed to head just enough to get inside the back post, 1 – 0. Less than two minutes later we were defending a set piece, after a foul we didn’t need to commit, and the clearance rolled out to Jackson who was standing at the bottom of the circle in our half. He cut outside, beat his marker with speed, carried 60+ yards, cut inside the panicked centerback who had been chasing him the whole time, skinned the GK and finished at the back post. It was a remarkable individual effort, 2 – 0. That’s two in two for Tewk. Might be heating up a bit. Hugh Neill, Nick and Henry Appleton and Jacob Sims also made their varsity debuts late in the game
Water Polo (1-1) played Spaulding this week and is at USNA tournament
Today, Landon’s JV water polo team traveled to the Naval Academy to compete in the Battle of the Beltway.
Sophomores Rawley T, Rayan A, Logan E, and Asher J, and Freshman Teddy P, Zach F., Jack M, Sam B, Liam P, Jimmy Q, we’re joined by Juniors Nathan P, Sam R, Thomas S, and Luke F to take on Calvert Hall, from Baltimore, and Malvern Academy, a team from Philadelphia that we lost two during pre-season. Calvert Hall could swim, and fast, and that was how they were able to keep the score in their favor. While we answered most of their goals with goals of our own, they had a few too many fast breaks and turns on us. The much wider pool was also something that impacted our judgement a little, as we were taking too many shots from too far away. Despite our challenges, we were able to keep the game exciting, but had to take the 16-12 loss in the end.
We didn’t have much time between our games, so we debriefed, refueled a little and prepared for our rematch against Malvern. While our entire JV was not at the preseason bout, I could tell that the team wanted to avenge their earlier loss to the Friars. They were a very aggressive team, so we came out determined to match their aggressiveness. The game was a nail-biter with the score climbing very steadily and evenly. Going into the fourth quarter, we were up by two with a score of 11-9. Malvern came in hot and quickly brought our lead down to one. They took a timeout at about 4 minutes left in the game. Their reorganization and pep-talk proved beneficial to them as they drove another ball into the net, tying the score. The Friars were fired up. Their aggressiveness, however, was also fueling the Bears, and on our next drive to the goal, we successfully drilled one passed the hands of their goalie. There were now two minutes left in the game and it was now time for our last timeout for a little rest, regrouping, and final pep talk. It was our ball and we made our drive. Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. The Friars now tried the same, but they too were met with disappointment as our goalie blocked their shot. We were now down to about one minute of play time. We had the lead by one, but everyone knows that a one-point lead can be fleeting. We made a drive, the shot was made, but missed and it was loose in front of their goal. The Malvern coach tried to call a time out, but we recovered the ball and dropped it in the net before play could be stopped. We were now up by 2 with less than 40 seconds to play. The Friars desperately tried to get another goal, but it was stopped, and with the clock now counting down from 10, our goalie patiently looked for a final pass which he made when the clock ran out. BEARS WIN 13-11!
Everyone played with heart and their were a lot of goals by the Bears. A special shoutout goes to our two goalies – Zach Fekrat in our first game and Logan Edma in the second.
