On February 18 & 19, 2022

Maryland Independent Varsity and Junior Varsity Championships

It was a momentous day for Landon wrestling history.  We tied our highest team placement by earning 6th overall in a field of 29 teams.  We had 8 place winners which beats 2001 with 6 and 2018 with 7.  We had 5 National qualifiers. We scored 4.5 points behind powerhouse McDonogh.

We had 2 STATE CHAMPIONSJoel Brown and Will Levy. Our first and only state champ was Lorenzo Lopez ’20.  We had our first time ever Outstanding Wrestler of the State Tournament in Will Levy. We had 10 wrestlers out of 14 make it to the second day. The team went undefeated in duals meets 9-0 for the first time ever.  Once again, this was a team effort.  Congrats to our two Seniors who both were excellent leaders and contributors to this team: Daniel Robinson and Daniel Samuel.

At the JV State Championships, we had two place winners.  Hugh Neill (138) wrestled well.  He lost in the first round to the eventual champion, but then rattled off 4 straight wins for 3rd place.  At 220, George Allen won an amazing overtime victory in the quarter finals.  He eventually lost in the finals to earn 2nd place.  Go Young Bears!

Seamus McNamara (113) wrestled his best of the year.  He hit the #2 seed in the first round and then almost beat a wrestler from Good Counsel that he had been pinned by twice this season. Daniel Samuel (120) hit the #5 seed and then lost a close match in the wrestle backs.  Nico Biabani (145) stepped up to fill in at 145.  He drew the #3 seed first round and was unfortunately injured in his consolation match.

Senior Captain and #8 seed Daniel Robinson started on fire.  He earned a pin in the first round and then lost two tough matches in a row to be eliminated.

Theo Shockey (106) made it to the second day after hitting the #1 seed and eventual champion in the first round and lost a tough match in the blood round.  Talan Smith (126) pinned his first opponent and then ran into the #2 seed.  He also lost in the blood round.

Anthony Savoy (170) was unseeded.  He knocked off the 8th seed in the first round and then wrestled hard to maintain that place for 8thDavid Laprade (195) pinned his first opponent and then gave the #2 a battle.  He was controlling and unfortunately got thrown to his back and pinned. David wrestled on to hold his #7 seed.  Ty Reyes (285) seeded #5 lost to the 4th seed in the quarters.  He wrestled back for a 7th place win a couple of exciting wins.

Will Abramson (182) finally got back in the line up after an injury kept him out for over 3 weeks.  He had a tough loss in the semi-finals. He bounced right back and placed 4th for a National qualifying spot.  Tiller Smith (220) was amazing as a freshman in the upper weights. We bumped both David Laprade and Tiller up a weight to fill the weight classes. Tiller did not disappoint. He earned 4th place after being seeded 5th

Joel Brown (132) had an amazing day. In the semi-finals, he was down by one point with about 15 seconds left. He threw his McDonogh opponent to his back and pinned him at the buzzer for a trip to the finals. In the State finals, he upset the #1 seed with a take down in overtime for the sudden victory and became Landon’s only 2nd State Champion ever.  Joel’s win in the final was his 100th career victory.  Way to go Joel!   At 138, the drama continued as #5 seed Will Levy proved his toughness in many ways.  He was beating the #1 seed and first ranked wrestler in the State in the semi-finals with a couple of amazing take downs.  With about 30 seconds left in the 3rd period, his frustrated opponent picked him up and illegally slammed Will directly on his neck.  Will was winning the match but could not continue. He won because it was an illegal move.  With clearance from the trainers, Will persevered into the finals.  He amazingly knocked off the #3 seed with a pin in the second period.  The crowd and coaches were impressed with his effort and he was voted Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament, and became Landon’s third STATE CHAMPION.  Will almost cracked a smile up on top of the podium. It was an amazing weekend for Landon wrestling.  We will return all but 2 wrestlers for next year’s squad. The future looks bright
