WRESTLING Coach Katz’s write-ups of his meets are the best. The pride he has for his Bears shines through his words.

What a great night for the Bears.  It almost felt normal in the old Perkins gymnasium.  We had our first IAC match in 2 years, and it felt goodGeorgetown Prep dominated our league for 13 years from 2005-2017.  Tonight, Landon was ready for some payback.

The match started at 106.  Theo Shockey continues to show toughness in a major decision 19-7.

We received a forfeit at 113 for Seamus McNamara.

At 120, Daniel Samuel won an exciting match that went back and forth all three periods.  In the end, Daniel reversed his opponent to his back to end the match 15-10.

Talon Smith received a forfeit at 126.

At 132, Joel Brown dropped his Hoya to the mat and pinned him in 0:24 seconds.

Conrad Brady won by decision at 138… 4-2.

Will Levy (145) continues to dominate his opponents with a pin in the second period.

At 152, Daniel Robinson had an amazing night by pinning the #1 ranked IAC wrestler in the first period.

At 160, Nate Furgeson pinned his opponent in the first period.

At 170, Anthony Savoy revenged an earlier loss to the #1 ranked IAC wrestler.  It was a back and forth match all the way to the end where Anthony put him on his back to seal the deal at 11-7.

Captain Will Abramson (182) pinned his wrestler at the end of the first period.

Freshman Tiller Smith 195 lost a tough match to an experienced Senior wrestler who is ranked #1 in the IAC.  He was the only Prep wrestler to hold up his rank against the Bears.

George Allen 220 and Ty Reyes 285 received forfeits to end the match in a dominating 67-4 final score.

In our second match, we beat Potomac 72-10.  They had forfeits at 145, 152, 160, 195, 285, 106, and 113.  Of the 7 matches left, we won 5 of them all with pins: Talan Smith 126, Joel Brown 132, Anthony Savoy 170, David LaPrade 182, and Tiller Smith 220.  The Bears are now 4-0 and looking forward to seeing their other IAC opponents.

Triangular Meet at EHS

We also brought an extra bunch of JV wrestlers and got in 20 matches.  Between the varsity and the JV, the boys won 37 out of 44 matches.  Tonight, there were many exciting matches.  Against Episcopal, they forfeited 6 weights: Talon Smith 126, Conrad Brady 138, Daniel Robinson 152, Theo Shockey 106, Seamus McNamara 113, and Daniel Samuel 120

Joel Brown set the tone in the first actual match. After several takedowns, he pinned his opponent in 1:24.

Will Levy was up next…. He also pinned in 1:40.

After a tough loss for Nate Furgeson to the #1 ranked IAC wrestler, the chain of pain pinned their way for the next four matches.. Anthony Savoy 170, Will Abramson 182, David LaPrade 195, and Tiller Smith 220.  Final Score: 72-9

Against St. James, they only had 2 forfeits to Theo Shockey 106 and Will Abramson 195.  A fairly athletic team, but no match for the Bears! Joel Brown set the tone again in the first match.  He wrestled their toughest wrestler who placed at States 2 years ago.  Joel dominated him with some amazing technique and continuous action for a pin in the second period.

Our next 7 wrestlers sealed the deal with all pins: Levy, Robinson, Furgeson, Savoy, LaPrade, and Tiller SmithTy Reyes won a close match at 285 by the score 3-0.  Seamus McNamara won10-5 in an exciting match at 113.  Daniel Samuel wore his opponent down after a tough start.  He was losing much of the match and at the end of the second period he turned him for the pin.  The final match of the night was Jibreel Muhammad at 126.  He has been on the injury reserve most of the season.  He did not disappoint.  He man-handled his opponent and pinned him in 1 minute.  Final Score: 72-6

Science

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsors  the National Science Bowl, a nationwide academic competition that tests knowledge in science and math. Out of 26 teams from 14 high schools in the DC/Maryland region, Landon’s Team One advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.  They bested last year’s finish by advancing to the Elite Eight. ..This year’s competition was virtual as teams faced off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format. The students were tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math… Landon was the only private school team from the field of competitors to advance to the elimination rounds.  “Landon’s math and science faculty should be especially proud of how these boys performed.  They were phenomenal,” said Upper School Science Teacher Beverly Sivaslian, who also coached the students
