Bear Hoops Trax—Joe McDonaldJoe McDonald
Joe, Landon 2012, attended the McNamara game, gets some good press already at GWU. He’s looking stronger, more confidant and a little more loquacious.
Rookie Point Guard Has Great Opportunity to StartBy Chris McManes, MikeLonergan.com Tuesday, August 14, 2012
WASHINGTON – A challenge and an opportunity await George Washington rookie point guard Joe McDonald – on the court and in the classroom.
“Joe has a terrific opportunity to come in as a freshman and be an impact player,” GW Coach Mike Lonergan said. “I’m sure he’ll take advantage of it.”
McDonald, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Lorton, Va., will play his first game in a Colonials’ uniform Saturday in Naples, Italy. He and senior Bryan Bynes are battling to become GW’s starter at the point, arguably the most important position in basketball.
“There’s a healthy competition between him and Bryan, and that’s good for our team,” Lonergan said. “No matter who starts, we expect the other guy to be a major contributor this season.”
McDonald averaged 22.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game last year at Landon School in nearby Bethesda, Md., and succeeded on 72.4 percent of his free throws. The Washington Post named him and fellow freshman Kethan Savage first-team All-Metropolitan. Parade Magazine also named McDonald All-American.
A three-time First-Team All-Interstate Athletic Conference selection, McDonald erupted for 49 points and 18 rebounds – both career highs – in an 83-80 victory over Savage’s Episcopal team on Jan. 27. McDonald sent the game into overtime by nailing a long 3-pointer as time expired. His four free throws in the extra session – he was 15 of 18 from the line – and two steals on Episcopal’ s final two possessions helped seal the deal.
McDonald and Savage played together on the same AAU team and for the Capital All-Stars in the April Capital Classic. They’re both wearing the Buff and Blue now.
“I graduated the beginning of June and a couple weeks later, I was on campus working out and stuff,” McDonald said. “I started off slow, but I’m starting to get the hang of things now – definitely. I’m more confident.”
McDonald was asked the biggest differences between practices in high school and college.
“Having to learn plays and stuff more quickly,” he said. “I guess in college it’s now more of like a job, so I need to learn as quickly as possible. And again, me being a point guard and GW needing a point guard, that’s something that I’ll have to do right away.”
Learning to Play the 1
It’s rare for a freshman to come in and start at the point for a major college basketball team. Even Kendall Marshall, a 2012 Phoenix Suns’ first-round draft choice, didn’t start when he first came to North Carolina. Lonergan knows the point guard position well. He manned it in the 1980s at Catholic University under the late Jack Bruen.
“It’s definitely quite a challenge for a freshman to become our starting point guard but Joe has always had lofty goals, and he’s a very determined young man,” Lonergan said. “It takes a special player to step in immediately and lead a team, but Joe is a fierce competitor and I think he’s ready for the challenges that lie ahead for him.”
Bynes (6-3, 173) primarily backed up Tony Taylor a year ago and averaged 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds. He appeared in 29 games with seven starts. He scored a season-high 10 points against St. Joseph’s. He and McDonald are competing hard in practice.
“They’re definitely making each other better,” senior shooting guard Lasan Kromah said. “Day in and day out they’re guarding each other; it’s a good competition.”
McDonald will have to change his personality a little to become the team’s quarterback.
“I’ve always been known as shy, so especially as a point guard, I have to be more vocal,” he said. “And coming in as a freshman and being more vocal with the veterans is kind of odd, but it’s just something that I’ll have to do.”
“Joe is doing a great job for us,” Lonergan said. “He’s really worked hard and is fitting in nicely with his new teammates.”
Kromah agrees McDonald is fitting in well.
“He’s a strong point guard [and] has a real good IQ for the game,” he said. “So, playing point guard as a freshman, he’s coming in and picking up the plays real fast.”
Off to Italy
The Colonials leave for Rome on Wednesday night and will play six games in Italy. Their itinerary includes many well-known, historical sites.
“GW wants us to have a good time there; it’s not all about basketball,” McDonald said. “Not many people on the team have been to Italy, so this will be a great experience for us all, just to be outside the country. This will be our first time out in public representing GW, and I think with the games, we’re going to get more comfortable with each other, just hanging around chillin’.
Hopefully it will carry over to the court.”
Before the Colonials depart, they have summer school final exams. The fall semester begins Aug. 28, just two days after they return from Europe. McDonald is majoring in civil engineering.
“It’s going to be difficult because civil engineering requires so much time and effort,” Lonergan said. “But I’m sure Joe will manage his time wisely and be successful on the court and in the classroom.”
