It was an exciting night for the Bears! The IAC title was on the line.  The student body came to support, and the stands were loud and proud.

Match 1: Landon 62 SSSA 13

SSSA has shown steady improvement in recent years, but tonight they fielded only eight wrestlers. The Bears won five of those matchups.

The match began at 285, where freshmanJASON HINTON got the team off to a strong start. Despite facing a larger and higher-ranked opponent in the IAC, Jason battled hard, eventually pinning his opponent to secure the win.

At 106, freshman ELIJAH ADAMS delivered a solid performance, earning a 6-1 victory against St. Stephen’s top wrestler. This matchup is likely to be a preview of the IAC finals in February.

Freshman TEDDY ABRAMSON continued the momentum at 113 with a dominant first-period pin.

Senior Captain THEO SHOCKEY followed suit at 132, dazzling the crowd with a lightning-fast pin in just 39 seconds.

At 175, freshman MACK DOCKX showcased his skills, winning by technical fall with an impressive 16-0 score.

In addition to these victories, PAPALIA, NEVEROSKY, MCNAMARA, KOEGEL, DAVIDOFF, AND TILLER SMITH all received forfeits, contributing to the team’s success.

Match 2:Landon 51 Bullis 30

[as I am wont to say “Bullis hit the mats” hidden portmanteau word]

We’ve crossed paths with Bullis multiple times this season, as their tournament schedule closely mirrors ours. Their team has shown steady improvement and performed strongly in the preseason. Bullis boasts six highly competitive wrestlers, including two ranked #1 in the state, as well as the top 20 at the national level. To win, we needed to dominate the remaining matchups.

Several weights featured evenly matched contests, and the Bears prevailed in all three. The lightweights set the tone early: ADAMS (106), ABRAMSON (113), and sophomore JUDAH BROWN (120) each earned first-period pins. At 126, ESCUDERO claimed a hard-fought 8-1 victory. SHOCKEY (132) and junior JOE PAPALIA (138) added two more pins, pushing the team score to 33-0.

As we reached the core of Bullis’s lineup, the momentum shifted. Bullis secured two pins and began mounting a comeback. At 157, senior CONNOR KOEGEL halted their momentum with a second-period pin in one of the closely contested matchups, putting the match nearly out of Bullis’s reach. However, they fought back with two more pins, tightening the score.

At 190, junior NICK DAVIDOFF delivered one of the most thrilling matches of the day. Trailing 10-0 after his opponent scored two takedowns and near falls, Nick chose the top position in the second period, locked in a cross-face cradle, and secured a pin to clinch the team victory.

Bullis made a strategic move to bump their nationally ranked 190-pound wrestler to face Tiller Smith at 215, but we countered by moving Tiller up to 285. Facing Bullis’s regular 215-pound competitor, Tiller methodically controlled the match, earning multiple takedowns before finishing with a pin.

THIS VICTORY ETCHED TILLER’S NAME INTO LANDON WRESTLING HISTORY AS IT MARKED HIS 100TH CAREER WIN. The crowd erupted, surrounding Tiller to present him with a poster and card to commemorate the milestone. It was a perfect end to a remarkable match. CONGRATULATIONS, TILLER!

MATCH 3: Landon 65 Good Counsel 18

After an emotional win, the Bears needed to refocus to face a strong Good Counsel team. We’ve encountered Good Counsel multiple times this season at tournaments, where several of their tough wrestlers have bested ours. However, fueled by adrenaline, the Bears came out firing. [ EDITOR COMMENT: REMEMBER GC is in the Uber Athletically Competitive WCAC]

ABRAMSON (113) set the tone with a quick pin in just 33 seconds, and Brown (120) followed with a forfeit victory. ESCUDERO (126), SHOCKEY (132), AND NEVEROSKY (138) each pinned their opponents, giving the Bears an early commanding lead. Good Counsel got on the board after we forfeited at 144.

At 150, sophomore MAX MURRAY delivered a dominant 16-1 technical fall. JUNIOR LOUIS MCNAMARA (157) and senior CONNOR KOEGEL (165) continued the momentum with pins. Connor, facing one of Good Counsel’s top wrestlers, trailed in the match but executed a reversal and turned his opponent for a dramatic pin.

At 215, TILLER SMITH, ranked #4 in the state, demonstrated his skill with another decisive pin.

The highlight of the dual came at 285, where freshman JASON HINTON faced a formidable opponent who had placed in every preseason tournament and defeated Jason twice. Jason maintained strong positioning throughout the first period, earning a takedown just as the clock expired. In the second period, Good Counsel’s wrestler escaped to make it 3-1. Choosing the top position in the third period, Jason secured a turn and a pin, redeeming himself with an impressive victory.

The final match featured ADAMS at 106, who closed the night in spectacular fashion with a lightning-fast pin in just 16 seconds.

Next week, the Bears travel to Baltimore for the Gilman Duals.
