BEARS LAX TRAX FAX 02262023

Division I
Hunter Taylor got his first start in goal for Michigan against Canisius and Graham Hertzberg scored his first collegiate goal in the game.
Lots of snow blowing around during Saturday’s games with Harvard’s field lightly covered with the white stuff by the time the game ended. The Ohio State/Virginia game in Florida suffered no adverse weather conditions, though.
GAME RECAPS
Dartmouth(Brendan Gallagher, Brett Gallagher, Cameron Brown, Zak Oehlerking) 17
Holy Cross 6
Dartmouth scored six goals in each of the first two quarters and surrendered none to lead 12-0 at the half. Things were a bit more even in the second half and Big Green maintained their first-half advantage.
Cameron took four shots on the day, two of which were on the cage, and contributed a ground ball and a caused turnover, too. Both Brendan and Zak saw playing time in the win.
Denver (Ryan Giles) 13
Merrimack 9
The Pioneers held Merrimack in check, never giving up consecutive goals. However, Denver failed to mount a sustained offensive threat, never scoring more than two in a row over the first three quarters. Denver’s offense broke loose late in the third quarter with a run of four goals in a row to go up 13-6 early in the fourth quarter. Merrimack then launched their own run, but just managed to string three together in the middle of the final quarter.
Ryan assisted on a goal when Denver broke up a Merrimack clear. His crisp pass toman attack on the opposite side of the field led to a quick goal for the Pioneers. He also took one shot in the game.
Harvard (Joey Graham) 13
Bucknell 8
Harvard’s field was cleared of snow, but the entire neighborhood in a bend in the Charles Fiver was well covered. The cold temperatures didn’t faze the Crimson who scored in bunches in the first half and did not give up consecutive goals to the Bison. Harvard extended their lead to seven early in the third quarter then the Bison found their game. Bucknell finished off the third quarter with five straight goals to pull within two as the game headed into its final period. Harvard owned the fourth quarter, finding the back of the goal three times while giving up nothing to Bucknell.
Joey put one shot on goal for Harvard.
Hobart (Jackson Galiani) 10
Colgate 8
The Statesmen applied consistent offensive and defensive pressure to pick up their second win of the season. Hobart scored three times in each of the game’s first three quarters and limited Colgate to no more than two in that span of time. Colgate scored twice at the end of the third quarter, then twice more to start the fourth to pull with two, but that was as close as they would get as the teams traded single scores to wrap up the game.
Maryland (John Geppert) 11
Princeton 5
Maryland incrementally built a lead with successive runs of two, three, and four goals without allowing back-to-back goals to the Tigers. Princeton broke that trend with a quick pair of goals early in the fourth period, but the Terrapins held Princeton scoreless after that. As was the case last year, the Terrapin’s faceoff game and defense was solid throughout the contest.
John picked up an assist in the game, took one shot and tracked down two ground balls.
Michigan (Graham Hertzberg, Hunter Taylor) 19
Canisius 8
Big Blue ran away from Canisius aided by scoring runs of six and five goals. The Michigan defense bolstered that effort by not suffering successive scores by Canisius over the first three quarters of the game. Michigan shot often and accurately so the Canisius starting goalie had to make sixteen saves to keep things respectable.
Hunter started in goal and played into the fourth quarter. He saved half of the eight shots that Canisius put on goal and scooped up three ground balls.
Graham scored his first collegiate goal.
Michigan (Graham Hertzberg, Hunter Taylor) 9
Marquette 14
Marquette ran off five unanswered scores in the first ten minutes then Michigan fought back scoring three times in the final two minutes of the first half to trail by two at the break. The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the second half, wrapping pairs of goals around a single score by the Wolverines.
Hunter took serious fire in the game as Marquette put twenty-seven of their thirty-seven shots on goal. His thirteen saves helped keep Michigan in the game.
Navy (JT Thomas, Preston Luger) 13
High Point 14
Navy had two of the three key ingredients for a win: clear advantages in faceoffs and ground balls. The third—strong play in goal eluded them. The teams traded brief scoring streaks in the first half with High Point closing out the half with three straight scores to go up by three at the break. The Panthers ran their lead out to four to start the second half. Navy took bites out of that lead, but made no significant progress until they ran off three straight scores in just of a minute in the middle of the fourth quarter. That rally pulled them within one, but High Point stopped the bleeding and held on for the win,
Ohio State (Cullen Brown) 6
Virginia 17
Ohio State and Virginia played a relatively low scoring first half, but Virginia got two late goals to end the half and then carried that momentum into the second. The Cavaliers’ defense clamped down on the Buckeyes over the final two quarters, allowing just two third quarter goals and shutting out Ohio State’s offense in the fourth period while allowing just one shot for the Buckeyes. Virginia closed out the game with four unanswered goals.
Cullen scooped up four ground balls for the Buckeyes.
Penn (Stephen Bou) 12
Duke 14
The Quakers had an early 2-0 lead then Duke ran off eight straight goals in the first half to go up 8-3 at the break. The Blue Devils put in two more to start the second half, then Penn rallied with four consecutive goals to pull within three. Over the balance of regulation, Penn pulled with two on three occasions, but each time Duke would respond with a goal to slow the Penn rally.
Yale (Jake Cohen) 11
Penn State 13
After the teams traded goals at the start of the game, Penn State went on a tear, scoring seven times over the final ten minutes of the first quarter. Yale rallied back in the second quarter with four straight scores to eat into the Nittany Lions’ advantage. The pace of scoring slowed in the second half. Yale pulled within two in the third period, but three straight scores for Penn State put the Bulldogs back in a five-goal hole. Yale closed out the game by scoring three more to again pull within two. and had chances in the final minute, including a brief man-up interval, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Jake started and had one ground ball for Yale.

Susquehanna 7

Will played in this game.
Dickinson (Will Single) 14
Roanoke 13
This game was closely contested throughout the first half with each team having and losing small leads. Dickinson got the last goal of the first half and the first two of the second to go up by three early in the third quarter. Roanoke chipped away the Red Devils’ lead after that, but could not get back to even until they ran off three quick scores late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at thirteen. Dickinson got the game winner with just thirty-nine seconds left in the game and was able win the final faceoff and run out the clock.
Will played in this game.
Gettysburg (Billy Banfield) 12
Salisbury 10
The Bullets had scant two-goal leads in the first half and Salisbury managed to tie the game up several times but could go out ahead until they closed out the third quarter with three straight scores. The Gulls held onto that scant lead late into the fourth quarter when Gettysburg ran off four straight scores to take the lead and close out the win.
Hampden-Sydney (Owen Hegadorn) 8
Denison 13
Hampden Sydney maintained a slight advantage throughout the first half, but Denison scored the first two goals of a four-goal in the closing minutes of the half. Denison completed the run with two more scores to start the second half to get their first lead of the day. The Tigers twice tied the game up in the third quarter, but a pair of late Denison goals put them down by two at the end of the third period. In the game’s final frame Hampden Sydney scored first to cut the Big Red lead to just one. Denison closed out the game four straight goals to take lock up the win.
Washington & Lee(Will Bou) 22
Catholic 4
Catholic scored the first two goals of the game then the Generals nineteen goals in a row. Two more to the Cardinals then W&L closed the game out with a burst of three scores. Washington and Lee kept the Cardinals’ goalie hopping, put forty of their sixty shots on goal so his eighteen saves prevented an even more lopsided outcome.
Will won eleven of seventeen faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls.
Washington & Lee(Will Bou) 15
Washington College 10
At the end of a back and forth first quarter, the Generals scored a pair of late goals to go up by two a the break. The Shoreman tied the game back up to start the third period, but W&L took the lead right back with their own pair of scores. The teams swapped goals to end the third period and Washington and Lee secured the win by outscoring the Shoremen 4-1 in the final frame.
Will had an outstanding day facing off, winning sixteen of twenty-four.
