A week ago, the final score was 5-12 and that was after leading 3-2 at the end of Q1, 2-5 at half and the Maroon left Hummel Bowl with a W. At the end of the IAC semifinal, the Bears walked out of the same stadium with a ticket to the IAC Championship game. An expert commentator told his audience that the High School had a formula for success—get an early lead and with a zone D plus a ‘27 Duke goalie (from Philadelphia) interdict their opponents’ shots. The Bears replicated this stratagem with success today.
EHS scored first at 10:27; the home team didn’t find the back of ZACH ABRAMSON’s 6’ X 6’ until the Bears had 6 markers on the scoreboard in period 2.
Landon’s first fissure in the Maroon Zone was @9:52 on a TROY ULISNEY to STEELE MADDUX goal. Clearly the Bears coaches had designed passes that created seems and led to short range shots. An EHS penalty resulted in the next visitors’ tally @7:35 with SEAN MURRAY goal on a seeing-eye pass from TROY. Goal #3 for the Brown team started from an inverted ANTHONY SAVOY pass to a cutting SEAN @6:52. Showing his ability to dodge, SEAN beat his man and the EHS netminder @3:37. To close out Q1, ANTHONY PANETTI showed his superb ability to put the ball on the stick of TROY who added the Bears’5th goal @0:20.6. The Bear X-men won 4 of 5 faceoffs. The Bear phalanx of poles limited the Maroon to 3 shots.
END OF Q1 BEARS 5 MAROON 1
The Ursine Advantage grew to +5 @10:48 when ANTHONY P found TROY for the 6th goal @10:48. The Maroon then threatened the visitors with consecutive goals at 9:53, 9:23, 7:51 and 1:11. Déjà vu all over again from 5/2 when the Alexandria team put up 4 goals in that games’ Q3?
HALFTIME SCORE BEARS 6 MAROON 5
Coach McGettigan must have made adjustment while the team huddled at this midpoint in this game!!! First, under Coach Filios, the Landon face-off team took over- HAYDEN GOOZH and TALAN SMITH, both reformed wrestlers with help from their wings, controlled possession. @10:56 SEAN fed STEELE for an early tally. EHS responded with 1 quick reply at 6:27. Perhaps the back breaker happened when LSM DAVIS OWENS caused a turnover, streaked up the field, DODGED THROUGH MOST OF THE EHS D with stickwork that attackmen would envy and scored @5:01.
Unfortunately, CTs and GBs were not recorded, because Landon dominated both of these statistics.
END OF Q3 BEARS 10 MAROON 6
Somewhat like the beginning of the 3rd inning, momentum was set when ANTHONY P moved the ball to SEAN for the 11th Bear score @10:55. The school that taught Viet Nam hero Sen. John McCain did not surrender—margin reduced to –3 at 9:19 and then the EHS attack shot at point blank, it was saved by ZACH, but the reboundended back in a home attackman’s crosse – goal #8 at 3:47.
After an EHS timeout at 1:22, the Bears ran down the clock by withholding the ball (not the HoF Syracuse Jimmy Brown’s version), by moving the ball around the perimeter. Bears maintaining possession were subjected to a high level of physical pressure. Then @0:22.1, TROY buried the ball into an empty net. Home team got the final entry into the goal scorecard at 0:10.6.
