Bears Ice Hockey players go to 2-0 with significant win over 2010-2011 sole “blemish”
Landon’s returning MAPHL and IAC team has returned to the ice to begin the 2011-2012 season. Their first match was against SSSA and the Bears, playing without six of their skaters, were able to beat the Saints 12-1.
Their second contest was against a strong Archbishop Spalding team whose efforts precluded the Bears from having an undefeated, untied season. Playing at the Rockville Ice Arena while RehaBear65 was still in the hospital, the account came from two knowledgeable parents in attendance–
“Da Bears” improved to 2-0 tonight on balanced scoring and strong defense, defeating Spalding 7-2 at the Bears Den. Seven different players score goals, led by Captain “Poto” (1g, 3a), and the defense gave up only 2 power play goals. Alex Joyce (2ga, 22 saves and a .916 save avg) was in goal tonight, and picked up where he left off from last season. Spalding had 7 power plays but could only muster 2 goals. Landon had zero power plays. This was Landon’s first game of the season with a complete roster, and the balanced attack should prove to be our greatest asset over the rest of the season.
This substitute writer feels that a big key to the game wasn’t just players, but the great fan support that was able to show up and cheer our team on!! According to this years Captains, (Potolicchio, Meike and Greenwald) the fan support and student pride gives us energy that other schools can’t compete with. Potolicchio said, “the team was very appreciative of all the students and parents that were able to attend on a school night.” Meike and Greenwald added, “they get the first, second and third star of the game!” The Coaches hope that many more fans are able to attend our games this year and see why Landon hockey is the team to beat. Coach Gammill commented that “the team always responds to great fan support. Great job and thank you Parents and Students!”
The Landon hockey team also wishes Sandy Murdock a speedy recover!! The rink is not the same without you.
