Bears Hockey 5 Gaels 1

Mount St. Joseph’s has a estimable athletic program and its hockey history includes 6 MSA Conference Championships, 8 MSHL Championships, and 11 championships in its current league, the MIAA Conference. Its 2022 season (0-1-6 and MAPHL 0-2) has been hampered with a 27 PIMs in 2 MAPHL games.

The Bears took the ice in their awesome new Brown sweaters. The game began somewhat inauspiciously with an MSJ breakout and a shot that ricocheted off a Gael skate and into the Landon net. Undeterred Watt Colclough put a shot on goal and the rebound was returned by Reid Pehrkon for the visitors 1^st goal @ 3:30.

Phillip Sears blocked 2 of the Gaels’ 3 shots, while his teammates peppered the home team goalie with 13 SOGs (my #s hardly official)

The middle period was a Bear goal onslaught – 4 unanswered on 17 SOGs. The referees called a 5 minute unreleaseable penalty on a Baltimore player and Landon used the advantage to good use. @10:30 the puck quickly moved from OWEN CALDERONE to QUINN FARLAND and then ARTHUR SMINK who beat the beleaguered MSJ keeper to make it 2-0. Still during the PP, REID  started the puck movement by passing to ARTHUR who got it to OWEN who put the biscuit in the basket @9:37.

Landon skaters throughout the game seemed to be first to the puck throughout the 45 minutes—speed? better anticipation? more disciplined structure? superior stickwork? Whatever, the checking and passing frustrated the Gaels who too often had to ice the puck for protection.

As the time approached the 15 minutes played mark, with another Bear PP advantage, REID found GRAHAM HABERL for a goal @1:45

After the Zamboni cleaned up the ice, the Gaels emerged from their coach fired up and his skaters were flying over the new surface—to no avail, however. MSJ was assessed another penalty and REID added another goal to his stats@3:05. Two penalties on the brown sweaters forced them to skate 5 Gaels v. 3 Bears for the 1:46 remaining in the game.
