Landon just beat its longtime rival, the DC Bulldogs and faced the Potomac bulldog skaters for the IAC tournament championship. This pattern of using extra minutes to win playoff games is a repeat of closure of the 2020– First round and IAC Championship, BEARS 3 PREP 2 and MAPHL Championship vs SJCHS 3-2. Tonight’s victory was built on the Bear D. Under Coach Parker, all 6 on the ice assume that every loose puck and even every black spheroid on the stick of an opposing player BELONG to the Bears- forechecking at breakneck speed forced numerous turnovers, stick and body checks defeated Bulldog possessions and #1 Phillip Sears made many critical saves, especially in the nerve racking (see AED paragraph in last post) one-on-one tests of 5 Bullis skaters.
The home team did not start as planned with the Potomac team tallying once in the first period (4:52) and to start the next 15 minute segment (12:51). Their SOGs went to zero (maybe 1 in the last period). The Bullis G man stopped 36 shots in regular time.
The Bears rebounded in the remainder of 2nd stanza– the initial Bear deposit of a puck in the back of the opponents’ net was started by a brilliant pass from Quinn Farland to Reid Pehkron whose deceit in the blue ice rang up a Bullis 2 Landon 1 score @9:31. The Potomac Bulldogs incurred the wrath of the referees 4 times in this middle time slot. The Bears used one PP opportunity on passes from Watts Colclough and Alex MacMillan with the tying mark by Sebby Kenary @ 4:01.
The last fifteen minutes were goalless — Bears 10 SOGs, Bulldogs 0 (by my count). The first O/T 6 on 6 for 5 minutes continued the ZEROES in the scorebook. SOGs- Bear 5, Bulldogs 2.
IAC rules require that the next period be played in shootout format– 5 v. Phillip and 5 v. Bulldog G.
First round :Landon sent out Reid and he scored; the Bullis designated shooter was stopped by PhillipSecond round:Arthur Smink also beat the Bulldog defender of the nets 2-0Third Round: Alex was unable to solve the Potomac Puzzle; Bullis got its 1st SO goal. 2-1 Fourth Round Owen C scored and the opposing skater scored: 3-2. Fifth Round Captain Quinn F missed . NERVES IN EXCESS Bullis sent their Captain, but as he moved left to right to try to get a better angle, Phillip was there and the skater lost control of the puck, SHOOTOUT BEARS 3 BULLDOGS 2
FINAL SCORE BEARS 3 BULLDOGS 2
