The Bears and Cadets, two teams with strong MAPHL histories, met on 12/20 at SJCHS’s arena for their first league match. The Bears (6.6 gpg and 3.3 PIMpg) had a very different approach to the game than their opponent ( 2.5 gpg and 10.2 PIMpg). Tonight’s contest was more consistent with the Cadets’ scoring average and the Bears incurred an uncharacteristic number of PIMs (10, including one 5 on 3 for 1:20 seconds) while the home team only spent 4 minutes in the penalty box.
The first 15 minutes saw Landon score on PP goal with REID PEHRKON feeding ANDREW CHIPPERFIELD @11:50. The home squad earned its 1st goal at 7:13 and took the lead at 5:06.
Landon Goalie JACK LiCALSI stopped 7 of the pucks headed for the back of the net. His offensive teammates put 4 SOGs.
END OF PERIOD 1 CADETS 2 BEARS 1
The middle period was highlighted by a REID short-handed goal @ 5:55. Landon did not surrender a StJ goal during P2 even though the visitors had players in the penalty box for a total of six minutes. JACK was stellar in the nets denying the opponents on all 8 Cadets SOGs. The Bear offense were able to generate 10 SOGs.
END OF PERIOD 2 BEARS 2 CADETS 2
The final segment was filled with exceptional skating, passing and checking by both teams. This was an exceptional display of hockey by both teams. A referee call against a Bear gave the StJ team its 5 PP and they succeeded at 1:55.
Coach Parker set up his team to equalize the score by pulling his goalie @1:12. Many wins at the draw followed by blue line slapshots catalyzing battles for the puck in front of the StJ goal were thwarted by the Cadet goalie. Landon 11 SOGs and Jack had 7 saves.
