Bears Football 22 SSSAS 23

According to a Saints’ official, the Alexandria team felt as though they had lost a number of games that they should have won. It is fair to assume that they were determined to win at all costs and indeed they did. Their play did not avoid the occasion of sin, racking up about 100 yards of penalties in the 1st half. However, the Saints’ determination prevailed 23-22 on a 44 yard FG at 0:03.

The Saints’ 1st drive accumulated 59 yards, more but for 2 penalties. The Bear D stopped the SSSAS O on two consecutive incompletes.

 Turning 180°, the visitors drove 65 yards for a TD on 9 runs, a nice Furgeson to Phillips pass and 3 SSSA sins (30 yards). TD on a 3 yard run by Ethan Ming, PAT good by Sean Murray (H) and Tommy Trowern (K) @0:19 of Q1.

The next 12 minutes started with an impressive 71 yard run by the Saints at 9:37. Three-and-out’s, punts, penalties and a BLOCKED FG attempt were the only things worthy of note in Q2.

The Bears received the second half kickoff, but a Landon penalty and a SSSAS pick six were the negative hallmarks of the 3rdQ, Saints 14 Bears 7.

The visitors showed character on its next drive—70 yards in ~8 minutes, 12 plays (1 Furgeson to Phillips pass,10 runs (Ming, Nathan F, Anthony Panetti 4 yards for the TD) @3:51. The normal PAT team came on the field, but holder/reserve QB Sean Murray took the snap, rolled to the right and hit Taylor Best with a 2 point PAT—Bears 15 Saints 14

The visitors’ aspirations grew when Anthony Savoy intercepted a home team pass, and then Landon’s freshman RB Ubie Zaid carried the last 2.5 yards for a TD with a good PAT to make it Bears 22 Saints 14 @ 11:45 of Q3.

The home team, buoyed by Senior Day, their last game and a big crowd at their fall festival, took a squib kick on their own 31 and covered the yards to a TD on 3 runs and a 66 yard TD pass at 8:43 of Q4. 2 point conversion PAT attempt pas broken up by Taylor Best, Bears 22 Saints 20. The Bears response, relying on Obie, went 23 yards and consumed 4 minutes, but resulted in another punt. SSSA moved the ball 45 yards and set up a 4th down @ 0:03 44 yard FG that was good.

Next Saturday, the Bulldogs of DC, having lost to the Bulldogs of Rockville, host the Bears on the Mount.
