Bears Football 13 Maroon 12

Landon traveled TO the Episcopal HIGH SCHOOL; their Hummel Bowl has been a site of past battles. The home Maroon entered the field with massive momentum after they beat the heretofore IAC bully, Bullis (now 1-3), 21-0. The Bears had to reestablish their  equanimity after a loss on Rockville Pike.

The visitors won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half. The Bears’ D established a pattern that occurred throughout the game. EHS gained 48 yards and was pressing for a TD when one of the away defenders stopped the advance. Here it was Hunter Taylor intercepting a Maroon pass. The referees did not concur that the Bear S ran it back for a TD; so, Landon started on a 62 yard, 5 play drive resulting in a TD. Aaron Hart, Taylor Best and finally Nathan Rosner consumed yards on the ground with the left-handed QB crossing the goal line @3:11. PAT GOOD BEARS 7 MAROON 0

The ancient (1839) Alexandria School once again possessed the ball for 37 yards but  a 4th and short failed. During this segment, the Hummel Bowl Scoreboard moved to Q2.The two teams exchanged 3-and-outs to run the clock down to 4:19. EHS moved the ball 46 yards, but their 4th and 4 on the 9 yard line failed. The Bear D held again

The Landon O needed to assert its control. Taking the 2nd ½ kickoff, winged T gained artificial turf (15 yards) to cross the midline. Having played conservatively so far, Hunter Taylor lined up ready to punt. The snap from Henry Leggett went to upback Nathan Rosner who traversed the line to gain. That bold move energized the men in White Jerseys. Runs by TJ Kim, then Tony Panetti set up a 3rd and 3—obvious run situation. Instead, Nathan R rolled and passed to Hunter for a 23 yard gain. TJ for 4 and  then Aaron Best ate up the final 14 yards in 2 plays. His TD came @ 7:10. The PAT was blocked, BEARS 13 MAROON 0.

A TFL by Zak Oehlerking stifled the home drive again. The visitors held the ball for 3 minutes of Q3 and the home team completed the third stanza marching 53 yards to score at 8:52 of Q4. The EHS  PAT “doinked” off the right upright. (ESPN did a special segment on doinking )

EHS tried an onside kick, but Henry Leggett showed great hands and covered the ball. The Bears possed the spheroid for 5 plays and left the ball after an unsuccessful 4th down conversion with 81 yards required for EHS to score. The Maroon went 68 yards to go and only a little more than 5 minutes left. They did score at 3:11, but much to their credit, they went for the win. The 2 point conversion attempt went incomplete. For the 2nd  time the High School tried an onside kick, but the Landon ‘hands team” was prepared and Chris Wells caught it. The Bears gained a 1st down on 3 runs bringing the electric chronometer to 1:03 allowing the visitors to “take a knee” twice to end the game.
