BEARS 8 RP 4

Apr 11, 2012
2 min read

On a cold and windy day, the Bears stepped up. They took an early lead and added to it. The 4th quarter was decisive with the visitors scoring four goals to pull away from the little Hoyas. As important as the Bears’ scoring (led by Hank Brown’s 3 goals and 1 assist) was the Landon D starting in the nets (Alex Joyce’s 8 saves) and extending out to a full complement of close defenders, LSMs. SSDMs and two way middies. The home team had tallied an average of 11 goals a game; today they had but 4.

On the first two plays of the game, the referees found fault with the RP actions and flagged them. On the second EMO, Hank’s adept passfoundTaylor Valencia forLandon’s first goal, at 9:43. Jack Falk had a powerful middie sweep, got his arms free and scored at 5:17. RP’s Kyle Shanahan scored at 4:23.

END OF 1ST Q BEARS 2 — RP 1

Midway through the next twelve minutes, Peter Laco rolled through the RP defender and fired through the home team goalie at 5:18. Bear Altemus scored for the home team at 1:44.

HALFTIME BEARS 3 – RP 2

This period exemplified the tenacious Bears’ defense. First, Alex “made the big saves”, said Coach Bordley. The starting close defenders, Alex Povich, Mark Strabo and Sellers Garrett, gave the RP attackmen few moments during which a Landon long pole was not in contact with them. The SSDMs, Phil Pena, Brandon Johnson, Jack Falk andMarshall Peters, draped the little Hoyas middies and gave them few offensive opportunities. The LSMs, Mike Rhoads and Andrew Mitchell, who  were assigned to the RP top dog (the little Hoyas mascot is a bulldog), deterred their opposite numbers from attacking the goal.

With 0:51.0 remaining in the 3rd Q, Hank Brown advanced the Bears’ margin with a stinging shot from about 12 yards.

END OF 3rd Q BEARS 4  — RP 2

The visiting team scored first in the last period at 9:32 on a pass from Hank to Sean O’Brien. Soon thereafter (9:11), Tim Golden scored on a pass from Bear Altemus. The next five minutes settled the game—on an EMO, Charlie Schnider fed Hank at 7:52; Hank netted his third goal (fourth point) from a midfield blast; and then, as the RP pressed out, took the goalie out to force double teams, Matt Potolicchio found Charlie on the precipice of the RP goal, who dunked it for the Landon 8th goal.

With seconds left, the RP coach called a time out, cruel and unusual punishment for those in attendance. After they broke from the huddle, they little Hoyas, Zach Wajsgras scored with 0:01 left.
