Bears 26 Lakers 16

The Bears in the past earned a 2-2 record in hard-fought contests; Boys Latin plays in the tough MIAA A division. Their 2024 roster includes only 7 seniors and many of their key players were classes of 2027 and 2028. Their weights and heights were impressive.

The Bears O was as dynamic as it has been for a while—speed leading to long runs, passing attack with a scheme that was exceedingly effective plus a line which exhibited the traditional well-timed, precise execution. The home team’s quickness, movement and coordination were  reminiscent of the SHOWTIME O,   patented by Lakers of Los Angeles on the hardcourt.

Typical of early season games, the initial possessions did not click, and the Defenders were able to stifle their opponents. The Bears put together a consistent run (7)/pass(3) series. A rare penalty led a 4TH down and a successful 6 yard FG on  a TILLER SMITH to SEAN MURRAY hold and a CADEN SOUTHWORTH kick @4:12 of Q1. BEARS 3 LAKERS 0

The Bear 11 defenders stopped their guests forcing a punt after 3 downs. UBIE “goneZAID took the ball on a sweep and ran ~57 yards to get the BL 18—runs by DP POPE, SEAN led to a QB1 to UBIE TD pass @11:08 Q2—PAT (same 3 as the FG) good, BEARS 10 LAKERS O.

BL offense did not cope with the Landon D and punted again. SHOWTIME: SEAN lateraled to UBIE  who passed to JAMES GIBSON for a 32 yard TD @ 9:23 of Q2. PAT FAILED, BEARS 16 LAKERS 0

The Baltimoreans held the ball for 4 minutes and gained 21 yards on 10 plays. The Bethesdans returned the spheroid to their guests. BL earned an FG of 17 yards at 1:12 Q2. BEARS 16 LAKERS 3

In 1:18 Landon was able to execute 9 plays only to miss a field goal attempt by HENRY KRUUSE.

HALFTIME BEARS 16 LAKERS 3

With 2Qs under their belts, one might expect smoother play after halftime- NO!!! Six consecutive series resulted in 0 points by the two teams.

The BL O held the ball for 8 plays, heavily dependent on BL27 RB (5’8’ 165#) to earn their 9th point at 5:37 of period 3, Two point conversion failed. BEARS 16 LAKERS 9

Finally, the Bears scored their 3rd touchdown @ 6:13 Q4 after 7 plays and 75 yards tallied a 26 yardSEAN TO CADEN TD pass. HENRY KRUUSE converted the PAT, BEARS 26 LAKERS 9

Much to their credit, the guests continued to fight and scored for the last time on a pass at 2:12– BEARS 26 LAKERS 16

Unfortunately, it was hard to keep up with all the players who contributed to this win. Unfortunately, many names who labor at the line of scrimmage were not mentioned—scribes get no preseason ☹ What is clear is that Coach Padalino and his staff made frequent, strategic substitutions-L’25, ‘26, ‘27 and ’28 had significant and important minutes. That bodes well for this season and beyond!!!

FINAL SCORE BEARS 26 LAKERS 16

Next Friday’s opponent, John Carroll, MIAA member beat John Paul the Great 35-7, grounding out 248 yards on 23 carries.

In 2023 Landon traveled to Bel Air and beat the Patriots 17-0
