Division I

Our first three Bears vs. Bears games in DI

Virginia, Notre Dame, and Dartmouth(Brendan Gallagher, Brett Gallagher, Cameron Brown, Zak Oehlerking)—the three DI teams that are still undefeated.

BEARS vs BEARS

Dartmouth(Brendan Gallagher, Brett Gallagher, Cameron Brown, Zak Oehlerking) 20

Hobart (Jackson Galiani) 16

Hobart rallied with six straight scores to go up 7-1 early in the second quarter.  Big Green recovered from that salvo and responded with six in a row to pull even.  Dartmouth built a lead incrementally in the second half to go up by four with ten minutes left in the game.  The Statesmen rallied with a run of three straight scores to pull within one with eight and a half minutes left in the game.  A pair of Big Green goals extended Dartmouth’s lead back out to three and they managed to hold on from there.

Cameron scored a goal of Dartmouth (his third of the season).

Yale (Jake Cohen) 11

Denver (Ryan Giles) 9

Neither team could establish any offensive momentum through the first two quarters and into the third.  Yale managed a couple of back-to-back scores but the Pioneers were limited to single scores.  The Bulldogs broke that pattern in the third quarter by scoring the last three goals of the period to go up by five.  Denver rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring three time and pulling within two of Yale with two minutes left in the game.  Denver’s ride gave them several chances in the closing minutes of the game, but Yale withstood the comeback attempt.

Michigan (Graham Hertzberg, Hunter Taylor) 19

Harvard (Joey Graham) 13

Harvard charged ahead early in the game using a run of seven straight scores to take a nine-goal lead in the middle of the second quarter.  Michigan fired right back and closed out the half with six straight scores over the last seven minutes of the first half.  In the second half Michigan continued to string together goal runs but Harvard could only pause the Wolverine’s runs with single scores.  Michigan’s second half dominance was fueled by solid advantages in faceoffs and ground balls.

OTHER GAMES

Maryland (John Geppert) 16

Albany 9

Maryland took control of the game with a string of five straight goals in the middle of the first half.  The Terrapins extended their lead with two three-goal runs in the second half.

Navy (JT Thomas, Preston Luger) 8

Colgate 17

Colgate buried Navy in a ten-goal avalanche in the first half.  Navy managed to score consecutive goals just twice in the game.  A wide disparity in goalie play decided this contest as Colgate’s goalie vexed the Navy offense throughout the game, saving twenty-one of Navy’s twenty-nine shots on goal while Navy’s goalie squad managed just four saves of Colgate’s twenty-one shots on goal

Ohio State (Cullen Brown) 3

Notre Dame 16

The Irish ran away from the Buckeyes by posting a 7-0 advantage in the third quarter.  Ohio State was limited to one goal in each of the first, second and fourth quarters and none in the third.

Cullen had one ground ball for Ohio State.

Penn (Stephen Bou) 13  OT

Saint Joseph’s 12

Neither team could develop or sustain any real momentum in the game.  The score was tied ten times.  St. Joe’s had brief one-goal leads in the first and third quarters, but more often Penn was up by one and St. Joe’s was tying the game up.  St. Joe’s tied the game up, but Penn was able to dominate possession after the ensuing faceoff.  In overtime, Penn won the faceoff and maintained possession until they got the game winner on their second shot.

THIS COMING WEEK

Ohio State (Cullen Brown) travels to Denver (Ryan Giles) in our lone Bears vs. Bears match this week.

Division III

BEARS vs BEARS

Tufts (Garrett Kurtz) 23

Amherst (Nicholas Kopp) 22

After three rounds of two goals for me, two goals for you, Amherst had the first substantial run of the day, reeling off five goals in a streak that started in the middle of the first quarter and ran until the middle of the second quarter.  After the teams swapped single goals, The Jumbos put together a run of six in a row to go up by one early in the third quarter.  Leads flipped back and forth until Tufts scored four straight in the later stages of the final quarter.

The teams combined for 128 shots on the day, 83 of which were on-goal (65%).

Nicholas took all 46 faceoffs for Amherst, winning 19 and scooping up seven ground balls.

Gettysburg (Billy Banfield) 15

Washington & Lee(Will Bou) 9

Gettysburg slowly built a lead up through the first half, scoring two or three at a time while giving up single goals to the Generals.  W&L put together a quick three-goal run late in the third quarter to pull within two, but the Bullets squeezed one more score before that end of the third period and opened the fourth with four consecutive goals to go up by seven.  The Generals mustered a pair of late goals but were unable to overtake the Bullets.

Will won half of his sixteen faceoffs, got to three ground balls and took one shot for the Generals.

OTHER GAMES

Colby (Miles Tonkel, Colin Flood) 26

Saint Joseph’s of Maine 6

The Mules started the game with a six-goal run, then, after Saint Joseph’s got their first score of the day, Colby ran off twelve unanswered scores.  Colby won twenty-nine of thirty-six faceoffs and collected three times as many ground balls which translated into a sixty-seven to twenty edge in shots.

Miles scored a goal for Colby and Colin scooped up two ground balls.

Colby (Miles Tonkel, Colin Flood) 8

Williams 15

Well into the third quarter this game was dead even, having been tied six times.  Then, over a fifteen-minute span that ran from late in the third quarter to late in the fourth, Williams went on a tear with a seven-goal run that put the game away.

Miles and Colin each had one ground ball for the Mules and Miles also contributed on caused turnover.

Dickinson (Will Single) 11

Illinois Wesleyan 9

Each team put together short runs in the first half and traded leads.  A pair of late first quarter goals by Dickinson set the table for the Red Devils taking over the contest in the second half.  Dickinson added four more unanswered goals to get things going in the second half and held Illinois Wesleyan scoreless until there were eight minutes left in the game.  The Titans scored two quick goals and pulled within two with over seven minutes left in the contest, but the game was then a stalemate until final horn.

Will saw playing time in this game.

Hampden-Sydney (Owen Hegadorn) 7

Cabrini 16

Cabrini dominated early with first half runs of five and four goals.  Cabrini’s last goal of the first half came with just three seconds left in the half, but the Generals found a way to squeeze in a faceoff win, a ground ball, two passes and a goal before the horn sounded for halftime.  W&L complemented that with a pair of scores to start the second half, but then closed out the third quarter with a run of four straight scores.

Hampden-Sydney (Owen Hegadorn) 16

Catholic 11

In the first half, Hampden-Sydney strung together short runs of three goals which were interrupted by single goals for the Cardinals.  Catholic had their own string of three late in the second quarter.  Hampden-Sydney closed out the scoring for the first half then ran off three more to start the second half.  As in the first half, Catholic was limited to single goals for most of the balance of the game, making just one run of three in the later stages of the fourth quarter.

Tufts (Garrett Kurtz) 31

Springfield 9

The box score for Tufts in this game looked like a football game.  Tufts score quarter by quarter: 7, 3, 14,7—four touchdowns and a field goal.  The Jumbos had a seventeen goal run that started just before the first half ended and lasted into the early minutes of the fourth quarter.  If Springfield had scored on every shot they took in this game, they still would have lost by eleven!

Garrett scored a goal for Tufts, the Jumbos’ 25th of the game.  He took two shots in the game and scooped up chased down two ground balls.
