#1 MARYLAND (John Geppert, Matt Kopp) 21

VERMONT 5

After a slow start the Terrapins were off and running in the second period, scoring nine goals while giving up just one to the Catamounts.  The pace slowed a bit in the second half, but the tone was all Maryland.  Each team scored once in the first ten minutes of the third quarter then Maryland ran off five goals in four minutes to finish the period.  Vermont started the fourth with their only back-to-back scores of the day then Maryland finished the game with the final three scores of the day.  Overall, team statistics appear to be fairly even given the huge difference in scores, but a closer examination of performance in the second and third quarters shows Maryland’s complete dominance.

John had four ground balls and a caused turnover for the Terrapins.

The IL All American squad was announced and John was named to the HM squad as an LSM

#8 BROWN 10

VIRGINIA 17

This game was dead even through the middle of the third quarter when Virginia launched an eight-goal run to decide the game.

#5 PRINCETON 12

BOSTON U 5

Princeton started the game with four straight scores then generally scored twice for each score by the Terriers.

#4YALE (Jake Cohen) 18

SAINT JOSEPH’S 16

Yale held off a tenacious St. Joe’s in one of the two most exciting games of the weekend.  The game was tied nine times and each team had and lost three-goal leads.

The Hawks went up by three late in the second period then Yale scored twice to close out the half and twice to start the second half to take the lead back.  The Eli got their lone three-goal lead in the middle of the third quarter but St. Joe’s rallied back to tie the game up at fifteen all.  Yale got a pair of goals to go up by two, but St. Joe’s cut that lead to one.  Yale scored once more then stymied the Hawks over the balance of the contest.

Jake’s second caused turnover of the day helped hold off St. Joe’s comeback attempt in the final minutes of the game.

#3 PENN (Stephen Bou) 11 OT

RICHMOND 10

Richmond was up by two early when Penn ran off a string of five unanswered goals.  The Spiders fought back in the second quarter and trimmed the Quakers’ lead to a single goal at the half. In the second half the teams traded leads by alternating pairs of scores.  Of Penn’s final two scores, the first lead to a tie at the end of regulation and the second came after winning the faceoff for overtime, when Penn used a dodge and two quick passes to get the winning goal.

#6 RUTGERS 19

HARVARD (Joey Graham) 9

Rutgers had an early 6-1 lead but the Crimson hung in and trimmed that deficit to just two goals before the half ended.  After the teams traded goals to start the second half, Rutgers went on five-goal run.  Harvard stopped the run with a pair of goals, but Rutgers scored six straight to put the game out of reach.

OHIO STATE 8

Cornell withstood Ohio State’s strong start and dominated in the second half.

#2 GEORGETOWN 9

DELAWARE 10

In a huge upset, Delaware scored the last three goals of the game with the winning goal netted with just eight seconds left in the game.

2nd Round Games

AMHERST (Nicholas Kopp) 12

MIT 13

MIT, one of two undefeated teams coming into the tournament, got off to an early 6-0 advantage before Amherst fought their way back into the game in the second quarter.  In the second half, Amherst scored twice for each time MIT scored and was able to get even with the Engineers early in the fourth quarter.  MIT went back up by two with their only back-to-back scores of the second half.  They were able to hold the lead, trading singles scores with the Amherst before the final horn sounded.

Nicholas was a force for the Mammoths, winning eighteen of twenty-seven faceoffs, collecting eight ground balls, and forcing one turnover.

MIT’s perfect season ended in their next game as they were trounced by RIT.

COLORADO COLLEGE (Max Becker) 8

BOWDOIN 23

Bowdoin scored five straight goals in the first quarter then closed out the first half with another five in row to lead 12-6 at the break.  The Polar Bears were right back at it in the second half, scoring six in a row to start the half.  After one more for the Tigers, Bowdoin ran off five more before Colorado College got the last goal of the game.

{Jack Murdock, Bear ’65 grandson, was injured and did not play for CC; Patrick Murdock, another GS and a FOGO was 9/10 at X for the Polar Bears. Both teams are heavily populated by players from the DMV.}

TUFTS (Garrett Kurtz) 33

NORWICH 10

The Jumbos did all the scoring early on, going up 11-0 before Norwich got their first goal of the day.  Tufts punished that impertinence by ripping off six goals in a minute and nine seconds.  Norwich fared a bit better in the second half until Tufts’ six goal run over a four-minute interval in the middle of the final period.

Garrett scored twice for the Jumbos, putting three of his four shots on goal.

WASHINGTON & LEE (Will Bou) 8

CABRINI 14

The Generals scored successive goals but once while Cabrini ran out their lead with a run of three and two runs of four.  Cabrini more than doubled up Washington and Lee on shots and shots on goal.  Fourteen saves by Washington and Lee’s prevented an absolute blowout.

Will won five of seven faceoffs and assisted on the Generals’ final goal.

SALISBURY (Jace Menendez) 22

STOCKTON 13

Salisbury scored the first three goals of the game but Stockton held even with them over the balance of the first half.  The Gulls reeled off five goals in a row to start the second half. Stockton stopped the bleeding with back-to-back scores and the teams closed out the third quarter trading single scores.  Another Salisbury run started the final quarter then each team scored once before the final horn sounded.

GETTYSBURG (Billy Banfield) 14

ROANOKE 8

Gettysburg shot rarely, but with great precision while Roanoke shot often but wildly.  The Bullets lead by five at the half on the strength of two three-goal runs while Roanoke had to settle for single scores across the half.  Gettysburg’s lead stretched to seven early in the third quarter before Roanoke put successive scores together.  After the Bullets stopped Roanoke’s attempted run, the teams trade single goals and pairs of goals before the final horn.

3rd Round Games

SALISBURY (Jace Menendez) 13

Cabrini 8

It took Salisbury two overtimes to beat Cabrini last month.  In that earlier contest Salisbury need to score three goals in the final two minutes to force overtime. In this NCAA tournament meeting, Cabrini lead 4-1 in the first quarter before the Gulls closed out the quarter with two scores then added two more to start the second and take their first lead of the game.  Cabrini stopped the run with a single goal but the Gulls ran off another four straight, the last coming early in the third quarter. Cabrini halved the Gulls lead with a pair of man-up goals but three straight from Salisbury put the Gulls up by five in the middle of the last quarter. Each team got one more before the end—no extra periods required this time.

TUFTS (Garrett Kurtz) 22

St. John Fisher 8

Tufts had more shots on goal than St. John Fisher had shots. The Jumbos shooting onslaught created a five goal run in the first half and a seven goal run in the second half while their defense allowed successive goals to the Cardinals just once.

Garrett put two shots on goal in the win.

GETTYSBURG (Billy Banfield) 17

Dickinson 7

After a regular season loss to Dickinson then an overtime loss to the Red Devils in the conference tournament championship game, the Bullets enjoyed revenge in the NCAA Tournament. The teams twice traded goals in the first quarter, Dickinson tying game at two all when the horn sounded to end the period.  Gettysburg ran off three unanswered goals to start the scoring in the second.  Dickinson then trimmed that lead down to one with what would turn out to be the Devils’ only back-to-back scores for the game.  One more first half goal for the Bullets plus three more to start the second half gave Gettysburg the lead for good.  After Dickinson stopped that run with a goal, Gettysburg racked up four more to go up by eight early in the fourth quarter, effectively ending Dickinson’s chances.
