Basketball– (18-9) lost IAC tournament championship battle with Bullis, n.b. Bears had the only Potomac Bulldogs’ loss to a DMV team. During his 50th Varsity game, Tyler Perkins scored his 1,000th point. Coach Turner’s squad has been invited to theMDPrivate School State Basketball Tournament (TWITTER)

Tyler has been honored with an invitation to the prestigious Capital Classic, the nation’s most legendary high school basketball All-American game (Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00PM at the Events DC Entertainment & Sports Arena) [tickets]

Hockey – (11-2-2) Coach Parker’s skaters faced the Potomac Bulldogs for a consecutive game, but as opposed to the IAC C’ship game, the Bears took control and did not let up—a 3-0 shutout. The MAPHL semifinals involved 2 IAC teams and the Rockville Bulldogs prevailed 10-6. The most salient observation is that even though Landon fell behind, the skaters fought every second of the 45 minutes of ice time. These players, especially the 2023 class, should be proud of all they accomplished.
Indoor Track schedule shows next meet in April.

Wrestling Coach KATZ’s grapplers at 2023 NATIONAL PREPS
placed 19th out of a field of 99. St. Mary’s Ryken is the only DMV team above the Bears (Baltimore excepted). Joel Brownplaced thirdby getting… (from a WaPo article headlining the SMR team placement)
:
“…on top of St. Mary’s Ryken’s Clayton Gabrielson early in the 144-pound third-place match at the National Preps wrestling championship Saturday, but a takedown from Gabrielson quickly evened the score.
It was the third time this pair had wrestled in the past three weeks, and Brown was victorious the previous two times. Saturday’s bout at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro went similarly — Brown came away with a 6-3 decision to place third, the HIGHEST FINISH A LANDON WRESTLER HAS HAD AT THIS MEET in Coach Andy Katz’s 28 years at the helm.
While Brown and Gabrielson have become competitors on the mat, the top senior wrestlers are also close friends. They were roommates when they attended McDonogh School for two years and have been wrestling together since they were little…”
FROM COACH KATZ–The Bear Wrestling season has come to a close. It was an amazing season filled with success, as well as, adversity. This team had an excellent team dynamic, and they supported each other through injuries, sickness, and an extremely difficult schedule to achieve many lofty goals. They won the IAC handily, placed the highest ever at States (3rd place), and broke the top 20 at Nationals (19th out of 128 schools).
This weekend, every wrestler earned at least one victory. Freshman Joe Papalia earned valuable experience with one victory over the 3rd place winner in the State of Texas as he is our youngest competitor to qualify. At 113, James Hanley went 2-2. He will definitely be in the mix to place next year as a Senior. At 165, Nate Furgeson earned another victory at a National tournament when he beat the 5th place State place winner in PA. Tiller Smith went 2-2 lost the consolation of 8, 2 rounds from placing. He beat a wrestler who placed 3rd in PA States. David LaPrade went 3-2 and lost in the “blood round”. He made the top 10 but fell short of the podium. He beat Texas 3rd in the state, PA 3rd in State, and avenged a loss to #12 seeded wrestler from Gilman at the state consolation finals. Finally, Joel Brown earned another spot on the podium for his 3rd National Prep placement. He went 5-1 and lost in the semi-finals to the #1 seed from Western Reserve in OH. He lost a tight 3-0 match. He then wrestled back for 3rd place. He beat a wrestler from Texas, Tennessee, a State champ from Virginia, and he wrestled the same wrestler from the MD state finals in both the ¼ finals and for 3rd place. Congratulations to this team and it coaches on an exciting and memorable season.
