BEAR.SPORTS,NEWS SUNDAY EDITION 02.23.2014
The added coverage, which the Landon Communications Office provides, inspires envy. The story, below, is written by a Vth Former, Mike Blazey, and spotlights Bears who play squash.
Danny Rubin had the unusual (but not unique; there is at least one other Bear with this distinction) honor of being Captain of the BC Eagles when the upset Syracuse, the theretofore # 1, undefeated hoops team, and the game was at the visitor unfriendly Carrier Dome 62-59 in overtime. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Joe McDonald hit a career-high three 3-pointers and matched his career-high of 21 points in 39 minutes to lead all players for the Colonials against #10 Saint Louis at the Billikens’ court.
Chris Hudnut was named the Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Co-Player of the Week for the third time.
Apologies for the Sunday Edition’s absence; out-of-town travel distanced the necessary access to the data base to research the Bear Trax information; sorry.
News Alert: Landon squash grows its potential

Each winter, students show their Landon pride by competing in sports like basketball, hockey, swimming and wrestling — well-known and respected programs with a rich history at the school. In recent years, another less-celebrated endeavor has been gaining popularity as a winter club sport: Upper School squash.
This season’s squash team attracted 18 Bears, each of whom competes for a subdivision within the squad (division 1, division 2 and division 3) based on ability. So far, the biggest hurdle for the team — which practices at the nearby Chevy Chase Athletic Club in Chevy Chase, Md. — has been getting enough practice time. Because they share the facilities with other local players and teams, the Bears only get in two or three one-hour sessions a week, so they need to make the most of it when they do get court time.
“On Tuesdays and Thursdays we have our on-court days and basically we divide into three groups ranked by position on the ladder,” team captain Sohrab Nawaz ’14 said. “Each group either works on skills, plays challenge matches or works out. We switch it around about every 20 minutes.”
Most teams facing limited practice time wouldn’t expect much success, but the Bears have enjoyed surprisingly strong results this season. According to Head Coach Robert Brutus, the division 2 team is an impressive 3-1 and will compete for a third-place finish in their league with a playoff match this Thursday, February 20. And on Friday, February 21, the division 1 team will aim to take home their league championship with a playoff victory at the Chevy Chase Athletic Club.
“We usually play local public schools like Bethesda Chevy-Chase and Whitman and occasionally play Wakefield and maybe even Gonzaga, and the season has actually been going a lot better than expected,” said Nawaz. “Each player has improved tremendously, and a lot of people are playing for the first time. We’ve had some tough losses, but I believe that we can pull through and really do great things.”
That feeling is shared by Nawaz’s teammates as well. “We believe that the team has a ton of potential because we have kids who love to play,” said Josh Copito ’15.
“We bring it every match and leave it all out on the court,” Louis Tanous ’15 added. “This team, we’re like a pack of wolves circling around our prey.”
