BEAR GRAPPLERS EARN 2ND PLACE IN IAC TOURNAMENT

Coach Katz has worked hard to improve his wrestlers and the boys efforts resulted in their attaining the #2 spot in a very competitive IAC.

Here are his notes about the team:

“Landon placed 2nd at the IAC’s today at Bullis.  This performance secured the second place for wrestling in the battle for the Cup. The Bears had 6 finalists, but ended with two All-IAC wrestlers at the end of the day.  Jarett Witzal won his weight class at 170 with a pin in the finals.  Jules Desroches made the finals for the third time in a row, but unfortunately lost.  Obviously in recognition of his career, the Coaches voted him All-IAC at large.

Landon Place winners:

106 Isaac Engermann 3rd

113 Jake Mehlman 4th

120 Mitchell Pan 3rd

132 Ben Goodfriend 3rd

138 Justin Conner 2nd

152 Miles Franklin 2nd

170 Jarett Witzal Champ

182 Brian Gelb 2nd

195 Josh Hunter 3rd

220 Jules Desroches 2nd

285 Matt Johnston 2nd”

The squad is young. Only two of the boys who scored points are seniors plus Seth Kaplow, who lost in the 2nd round. The Class of 2015 includes a champion Jarett Witzal, Miles Franklin, who both scored points and Brian MacLaury (a 2nd round defeat). The other boys who scored points include 3 sophomores and 3 freshmen. This team still will compete in the StA tournament and the MD States. Hopefully several of these Bears will qualify to grapple at Nationals!

A few years ago, the Bears were a distant 4th in the IAC, with this returning talent next season may see the push up to #1. Go Bears!!!

Also impressive is that several of these boys play multiple sports.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Let the games begin!

The NCAA Lacrosse season seems to start earlier every year.  This year, the season’s first games were played on February 1 as Furman (Connor Lynch ’13) and Lehigh met in the Paladin’s first game as a D-I program.  As is often the case in inaugural games, the newly minted Furman squad fell to a more seasoned Lehigh Mountain Hawks team, 13-6.  The second season starter saw the Delaware Blue Hens (Taylor Valencia ’13 and Philip Pena ’13) down Highpoint 10-3.

Elsewhere, Navy (Matt Morrison-C ’09, Patrick Keena ’11) faced UVA (Mike Rhoads ’13) in a scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corp Stadium in Annapolis Saturday.  Here are a couple of pictures (courtesy of Ben Mackey and Laxpower.com) which feature Patrick (#23):

The D-III season gets off to a later start with the teams we feature (Dickinson, Gettysburg, Ohio Wesleyan and Hamilton) still with over two weeks until their first games.  Ohio Wesleyan (Tommy Minkler-C ’11) will face Gettysburg (Wes Lincoln ’10) in a Bears vs Bears scrimmage in two weeks on February 15, and  these are the first regular season games for D-III  teams with Landon alums:

BEAR LAX RECORDS

Thanks to all who have responded with additions to the history of the Landon Lacrosse. So far (there may yet be others who write with other additions/corrections), here is the summary:

            567 wins

51 1st Team All Met Players

6   Washington Post Player of the Year

39 High School All Americans

33 College All Americans

35 College Captains

22 NCAA Championship Rings

1 Tewaaraton Trophy winner

1 NCAA Defensive Player of the Year

1 Lt. Raymond Enners AwardUSILA‘s Player of the Year

Those numbers are the envy of most scholastic lacrosse program, but one of those achievements is most telling.

The Landon Mission statement establishes the following words as the goal of the school’s education:

Landon School prepares talented boys for productive lives as accomplished, responsible and caring men whose actions are guided by the principles of perseverance, teamwork,             honor and fair play.

That 35 Bears were selected by their peers to lead their teams is proof that the Mission Statement’s goal has been and is being accomplished. Congratulations to Coach Bordley, his assistant coaches, every Landon teacher and administrator; quite clearly your tutelage of these young men has contributed to the positive development of these boys as they become men.

BEAR HOOPS ALUMNI

To make the same point in the basketball realm, Danny Rubin was BC Coach Donahue’s initial recruiting class and played extensively in his first two years. The subsequent recruiting classes have increased the talent pool and Danny’s time has suffered. He could have easily moved to the end of the bench and disappear. In recognition of his four years of hard work and positive contributions, this Bear ’10 was selected as the captain.
