BEAR HOCKEY 3 KNIGHTS 2 IN OVERTIME
The 2020 MAPHL tournament is filled with anomalies- the differences between the #1 seed and the #8 were small—i.e. #8 O’Connell beat #1 SJCHS 7-4 and #3 Bears tied #1 Cadets 3-3. In the 1st round of MAPHL #4 DeMatha lost to #5 MSJ. This is the tightest rankings for MAPHL over the past 10 years.
Landon met Bishop J O’Connell on January 29 at the Caps’ MedStar Iceplex. It was a back and forth battle with the Knights tying the score, 4-4, at 0:12.3.

At home on 02/18 the Knights were pushing the puck and not until 6:17, they had an advantage in shots.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead on two successive pucks in the back of the nets. Both of these goals were scored in the 1st period—Will Lawrence on a powerplay scored @ 6:15. His tally was assisted by Oscar Smink and Tommy Kenary.
The next goal was by Matt Brille, unassisted @ 4:16. Another PP advantage, but the junior started his rush from deep within his D zone and deked his way through the Knights.

The middle period started with two successive penalties against the Bears—at 10:33 and then at 9:43. The visitors had a +2 advantage for 1:12 and were able to hit the Bears’ net 0:23 into the 5 on 3 advantage. The slapshot from the point had two helpers recorded. The Landon D successfully frustrated the remainder of the BJO’C advantage.

The last period started with the home team on a PP, but a Knight forward broke out of his D zone and flew down the ice to equalize the score at 14:00.
Sabermetrics, not really, pointed out that the Bears’ 3rd period saw substantially fewer shots than the 1st and 2nd trimesters. That statistical diminution of energy did not occur in this MAPHL semifinal. Coach Erickson used 4 lines of forwards and 3 D pairs throughout the game. That rotation kept the Bears fresh in the remaining time through O/T.
END OF REGULAR TIME BEARS 2 KNIGHTS 2
This is where the superior Bear energy brought the desired outcome. Over this 5:00 Landon put 6 SoGs while the Knights only registered a single shot.
@ 0:22.8 a Den of Bears crashed the Knights’ net and assists were awarded to Tommy and Will PLUS THE GWG TO JACOB HOOKMAN-VASSA!!!
