This week we have the benefits  both of PJ’s preview of SSSA and of an unusual review by Woodberry Forest’s coach of last week’s WFS- Landon game.

After last week’s heartbreaking loss to Woodberry Forest the Bears enter back into IAC play for this week’s game against the St.Stephens/St. Agnes Saints. The Saints are 5-2 entering into this week’s game with losses to only Bullis and Blue Ridge. Now don’t doubt SSSA this year they have some very good players and have beaten some quality opponents.

On offense SSSA has a lot of athletes to whom they try to get the ball. On the offensive line they’re very young, filled with sophomores and freshmen. At the receiver they have a lot of speed, if they decide to throw. #5 Sam Galahan is they’re best receiver and has had 19 catches for over 300 yards so far this season. The Saints backfield though is one of the best in the IAC. Darius Manora their running back is a 2 time all state VISSA running back and has committed to play at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a very good outside runner and has good speed, when he is in the open field.

At quarterback there’s Ish Seisay, he has a lot of speed, has a good arm, and loves to run around in the pocket. He will be a main target though for the Bear’s defense. I think that if the Bears can stop the Saints’ run game, the defense will come out on top.

On defense SSSA runs a 3-4 defense. They play as a unit on defense, and are very fast, but not as impressive as their offense. The Saints will usually send pressure from the edge with the outside linebackers.  Their pressure is good, averaging about 1 or 2 sacks a game.  The secondary is manned by 2 way players, including Manora #20 and Seisay #7. Their secondary has a total of 6 interceptions and 2 were returned for touchdowns. But the Bears offense, I think, should be able to put up some points on the Saints defense.

Coach Alexander on Landon GameCoach Alexander on Landon Game

This season’s showdown with the Bears from Landon was as tough and physical as all the other contests have been. The outcome was once again decided late in the 4th quarter. Landon is always a well coach tough and physical team. It is a guarantee that when you’re done playing the Bears you will have some new marks on your helmet.

The day could not have been better for football. We had clear skies and crisp temperatures that reminded you that it is football season. There was a strong wind blowing down the field that had gusts up to 30 miles an hour, but a great day for football. The excitement began early when we realized we had some special guests at our game. Stanford University head Coach David Shaw and his offensive line Coach Lance Anderson showed up just before kickoff to watch a few of our players. That was a wonderful surprise and certainly got the boys excited…..

We faced a very physical and talented running team this week and held them to 160 total yards and just 103 on the ground. The Landon players are very well coached and their offensive coaches kept probing our defense for weaknesses……

Our special teams struggled a bit with the wind and the Bears efforts. We missed a field goal, had an extra point blocked and did not get the field position advantage on punts and kicks that we would like….

The Landon game has become such a major part of our season. It is a game I always look forward to because I learn so much about our team when we play them. Landon will not quit, make mental mistakes, or beat themselves. They are physical and always have a great game plan. I told the defense just before the start of the game that if I could play in one game on our schedule as a player it would be Landon. It is always big boy football and your better have the courage to come down hill. They will.

BEARS v. SSSA @ LANDON SATURDAY at 1:30pm
