高山の古い町並み – Old Town

When I first went to walk through Takayama’s Old Town, the sun was already starting to set.  It really is as scenic as the travel books say it is.  It made me feel like I was in Edo Period Japan.

It’s a lot of fun to walk through, though it gets pretty crowded rather quickly.  That liveliness, however, is to me one of the attractive points to Old Town.  There are a variety of things to see here, from old sake (which Takayama is famous for aside from its beef) breweries, to museums and art galleries to heritage houses.  Alternatively, you can have plenty of enjoyment simply walking through the streets.  The stores lining each side are full of traditional wares and foods to try!

Vital Information:

  • Open: 8:30 to 17:00

  • No Closing Days

  • Free Admission

  • 10 minute walk from Takayama Station
