Your team name is…really awful!
We wrapped up our Saturday night (3/27) USTA match around 9pm and I was happy to be on the winning end in what turned out to be the deciding court in our team match. We won 2-1 over UMLY and that improves our record to 10-0 for an undefeated season – our 2nd in 3 years. Woo hoo!! The record is unimportant in the grand scheme of things but it’s not easy to go undefeated. And, we are a group of friends who practice together weekly for the last 3 years so we are not a recruited team. We do have a strong team but if it wasn’t for winning two 3rd set tiebreakers with the matches on the line we wouldn’t be where we are today. There is lots of parity in this league. Us and the brand new team, Just for Fun, will advance to Districts. However, the Pirates, TST, Kinetix or the Snipers were all good enough to win Districts and advance to Sectionals.

My opponent Saturday night didn’t know who I was or that I was the captain of the team they played or that I am the one who named the team. She said shortly after our match as we were joking at the net, your team name (Pork Chops & Applesauce), <pause> it’s… <pause>, really awful. To be fair, I have heard that before. Our previous name, Komet, was awful too and I had wanted to switch it for a few years. When I suggested the Pork Chops moniker I received mostly negative feedback from my teammates. What it means is simply my philosophy that two average players who practice regularly are better than two individually great players who introduce themselv

es to each other and play a match. We have almost no mixing and matching of partners

as opposed to most of the teams who create new combos on the fly based on availabilities and the search for the best pairings they can find. In other words, Pork Chops and Applesauce is another way of saying, “great combinations.” And, since we’ve been fairly successful, I’d say it’s a good philosophy, lousy name and all.
Here are the final standings for our 2010 Philly 8.0 Mixed flight.

Up next is Districts at Pennsbury Racquet Club April 17th and 18th. We are fortunate to have this opportunity – we now need to be disciplined enough to properly prepare so that we can put ourselves in a position to advance to Sectionals in June. Outstanding job to the entire team. We’ve had a fun season, great practices and every expectation that we can fullfill our goals. That goal by the way is Nationals November 19th-21st in Tucson Arizona.
