WNBA Concludes First Ever Rivals Week

S. Samek

The WNBA started something new for this season, Rivals Week. During the Week of August 9th-17th 2025 the best rivalries are on showcase.

One of the rivalries showcased was a rematch of the 2024 WNBA finals between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx. This matchup was held on Saturday August 16th, 2025 and was between the top two teams in the league standings currently. Could this be a preview of the 2025 WNBA championship as well?

The Liberty also played a 2023 finals rematch against the Las Vegas Aces during the week.

The final day of rivalry week is a big one with five games on the schedule. Indiana plays Connecticut, Los Angeles plays Washington, Dallas plays Las Vegas, Phoenix plays Seattle and Atlanta plays Golden State to conclude the week.

This is a really neat idea, and I hope they continue it in the future. Hopefully over time the rivalries can really build up and we see some meaningful contests between true rivals. Yet for a first go at hosting one I would say it was successful.

Be sure to tune into the games today to end rivalry week on a high note.
