Why Jesus Died – (33) To Make His Cross Our Boasting and (34) To Enable Us to Live by Faith

Here are reasons #33 and #34 that Jesus came to die according to John Piper’s book The Passion of Jesus Christ:

33. To make His cross the ground of all boasting (Gal 6:14) – Every boast we have, whether it be in God (Rom 5:2), our tribulations (Rom 5:3), our weaknesses (II Cor 12:9) or the people of Christ (I Thess 2:19) should be because of the cross. Why? Because every good thing in our life comes because of Christ’s work on the cross. We owe every blessing and good thing to His cross-death.

34. To enable us to live by faith in Him (Gal 2:20) – It seems like a paradox to say that we are crucified but we live. What Paul meant was that there was an “I” that was crucified (His name is “old man.”) and an “I” that now lives (His name is “new man.”). The work in our lives from this point forward is Christ’s work; He accomplishes it on our behalf.
