Who Are the Best City University London Women’s Players Statistically from 2015 to 2020?

Jun 6, 2020
9 min read

Prologue

One question I always like to try and answer is who are the best players statistically.  I did this with recently with Polonia SideOut London and the Women’s Super League.  Now I want to know who are the best players at City University London (CUL) I have ever coached there.  Well, I compiled the data just to find out.

Statistician’s Note

* From the second season onwards, nearly all the matches were filmed and statted.  I only statted one match in the first season due to the low level of the league (although I did wish I filmed the Conference Cup Finals, a tough match against Queen Mary, who at the time was undefeated and one division higher than us). * Sets statted include BUCS League matches, BUCS Cup matches, Student Cup matches, tournament matches (Little Giants and VolleyFirst) and friendlies.

Chiara (188) and Natasha (187) are the top 2 players with the most sets statted.  Both players was there for nearly every single match for three years.  Micol Sanflippo (130) has a chance to catch up as she has one season left.

Sofia Quaglia scored a massive 507 points in 112 sets statted.  If I statted more matches in her first season (2015-16), when she would have totally dominated at BUCS Tier 3 level, it would have been much, much higher.  Second place Micol Sanflippo (430) will likely surpass Sofia, as she’s only 77 points behind but has another season to play.  Stella Constantinou (322) only played with us for one season and she jumps in third place.

Kanika Eung only had a half season at CUL but her point scoring skill was immense as she had a 2.48 points efficiency ratio.  Micol Sanflippo comes in at second place with a 2.32 PER.  The wing player with the highest PER is Zoe Van Den Brink at 2.30.  This is very high especially as reception errors lowers the PER for wing players.  Middle player Sofia Quaglia was used in the passing unit too so it is impressive her overall PER is still 2.24.

Sofia Quaglia top the list for most kills (346).  This does not include the 44 kills via free ball attempts (standing volleys, downballs etc), as she is known to do.  In second place is Micol Sanflippo (315) followed by Stella Constantinou (237) and Chiara De Vito (192).  This matches the top four for points scored.

I had to add several decimal places to differentiate between players.  Sofia Quaglia tops another list with the highest hitting percerntage at 31.3%.  She was a beast and I would have liked to have seen her compete more in the BUCS Tier 1 level.  Micol Sanflippo (30.6%) is only 0.7% behind in second place.  Kanika Eung (28.7%) rounds up the top three.  For the highest hitting pct. for a wing player, it is an extremely close contest between Stella Constantinou (20.963%) and Zoe Van Den Brink (20.958%) with only 0.005% between them.  This is when you just call it a draw.

I did not stat overpasses until 2017-18 season and neutral passes until the 2019-20 season.  Those passes were previously statted as negative passes thus they have been given a 1 point weight.

Chiara De Vito has received the most perfect passes for CUL by far (275), almost double of second place Stella Constantinou (143).  I once described her as a superwoman libero and it shows.  Elisa Mejia (86) has a chance to catch up to Chiara as she’s a PhD student so she potentially has many more years on the team.

Sofia Quaglia has by far the most block kills for CUL with 50, almost double of that of second place Alexis Lim’s 28 block kills.  As I wrote in my blog post on whether it is worth blocking, you can see that blocking is not a major part for many of the players.  On the all time list of block kills, 6 block kills will get you ninth place (Ludmilla Romagnoli and Ludovica Zurzolo).  In fact, 3 block kills is enough to get you joint 12th place on the all time list (four players, not shown here).
