Where’s Rafa?

The first tennis major tournament of the year is the Australian Open which commences Monday, January 14th. Unfortunately, the tournament is lacking Rafael Nadal. I heard a rumor he hasn’t played in 6 months and is sitting out a doping suspension. Could this be true? His last match was a 2nd round loss in late June at Wimbledon two weeks before the Olympics. (Bucket list goal: I will make it to this tournament, eventually.)
So what’s with 2013? I thought this year would be like a hotel elevator and we’d go directly

to 2014. Believe it or not, there is a fear of 13 – it’s called Triskaidekaphobia – but I’m not afraid.
And If you thought I was ADD before, you ain’t seen nothing yet… (I know, pshaw!)
My 8.0 Mixed doubles team (Pork chops and Applesauce) is 2-2. Our flight is comprised of 6 competitive teams with no clear leader. This is what we’ve always wanted, now we have to step it up on the court. It’s the little things that make a difference in the close flights such as practices, availabilities and good pairings. Bottom line, it’s fun tennis this year and that’s what it’s all about.
My 9.0 Mixed doubles team has it’s first match this Friday, January 11th. This is our 2nd year and we are hoping to improve from last year’s results. We are definitely the 8# gorilla in this flight so the only

place to go is up – “which is nice” (in my best Carl Spackler voice).
My goals for the year are to teach my kids how money works and the importance of spending less than you make. A friend of mine recommended 50 Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School by Charles Sykes. I’m reading this to them at bedtime. The basic premise is that life’s not fair and children today are too insulated and coddled from this stark reality. And the boys love it – go figure.

Has Mixed Martial Arts replaced Boxing completely? Boxing seems to be on the way

out. I’m curious if the exciting fight where Marquez knocked out Pacquiao December 9th is the last major event we’ll see for some time. The UFC seems to be growing Gangnum style. They have added weight classes with the StrikeForce aquistion and now female fighting with the coming of Rhonda Rousey. I think the UFC will become as popular as boxing ever was.

Regarding recent movies, we went to see (as my son said) “Life of Cake.” This was a good movie and it’s certainly fun to talk about. I can’t believe that the bloody 3D Texas Chainsaw Massacre topped the box office receipts this weekend? The good news is that Enders Game (my favorite book) is being released 11/1/2013 with Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff. I can’t wait.
Advertising– now this is funny. A 15 year old boy recently asked on Facebook for a Taco Bell Speedo – and they agreed. Think outside the buns…

And for quotes, you have to love this bucket of contradictions from Clay Aikens, (Participating in Celebrity Apprentice) “puts me in a position where I’m forced to tolerate individuals I wouldn’t normally tolerate. I don’t live my life like that,” he said. “I don’t like to spend time around people I abhor.” I could just see Clay as Gru in Despicable Me, “And I won’t even MENTION the Eiffel Tower…also, from Las Vegas. But! Am I upset?! Nooooo!…………………….a little!”
