When You Don’t Have to Run
“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1)
It seems like Solomon is saying that the honorable have nothing to fear. The one who possesses integrity and tells the truth doesn’t have to worry about what they have said if they have always spoken the truth.
By contrast, a liar must remember his/her lies in order to be consistent. Thus, if someone who is guilty of breaking God’s law is pursued, the only real escape is to run. But the man of God can remain and stand up to any questioning because the man of God has done the right thing.
Matthew Henry said that “sin makes people cowards.”
The conscience is what Solomon has in mind. Guilty consciences lead to flight; “innocent” consciences lead to staying put. If you do the right thing, you don’t have to worry when someone comes to question you.
