What was my approach to learn Salesforce?

Hi again! 😀

Lot of my fellow #Ohana members have asked me about how I started with Salesforce. And they come up with questions like:

-How did I start? -What all did I study? -What all things they can do to sharpen their knowledge in Salesforce?

I will try to share to my end of the story in hope that it helps those who seek answers to questions like these.

After getting my first job and when I was introduced to Salesforce, I was given some basic training about Salesforce and about its basic architecture by my mentor for about two weeks. At the same time, I was introduced to Trailhead so that I could practice what I was learning. My training played a very vital role in setting up the foundation of my understanding about Salesforce. Now if you are wondering that damn! he got training then don’t worry. I found an online blog post series on AdminHero which pretty much describes all of what I had received in my training. So no excuses now.

Moving forward, that was it. The training was done, and it was all me and Trailhead. At first I was inclined towards the development side, since I love to code. So Trailhead was my admin guide and gave me some basic understanding of Apex as well. Trailhead helps you build a basic understanding of the concept but that’s not it. You have to go beyond and study resources which discuss the concept in detail. I prefer the standard development guide provided by the Salesforce. Initially, it was a bit of struggle to understand the coding construct in Salesforce, so I had to watch lot of YouTube videos.

After understanding the concepts, it was time to work on scenarios and use cases, so I started practicing trigger use cases. But this was too less to satisfy my hunger for the use-cases for Apex and Visualforce, so in search of use-cases I ended up on Salesforce Developer Forums. From this forum, I picked up a lot of questions to practice, and very soon I got quite comfortable in Apex.

After this, I decided to make a move on Admin front, but the problem again was from where do I get the use cases! And in my quest to find the use cases, I found my HOME, i.e. Trailblazer Community! When I started, I took a glance at the questions and my first thought was let’s go back to developer community and told myself that maybe Admin is not my thing. But me being me, took up the challenge. And today I feel that this was one of those rare sensible decisions I have made in my life.

Initially, to be honest, I was finding it really difficult to answer the questions. There were times when finding a solution to a query would take hours. I also used to “follow” the questions whose answers I didn’t know. And when answered I used to go through the solution to understand the things(I still do that).  But as things progressed I became efficient in answering,  and here I am today, in the top 15 active members on the community.

My next move was to get my hands dirty with Lightning framework. Since Lightning is still new so I couldn’t find a good source for use cases so I started reading blogs. Here are few amazing blogs for lightning:

I would strongly recommend watching this video series on Lightning Development by Manish Choudhari, author of SFDC Facts blog.

So this is pretty much about it guys. If you are wondering how I was able to learn so much in such a short time frame then that would be because of the fact that I spend about 14 hours working on Salesforce, on an average on a daily basis. I call it my #BeastMode. 😀

I really hope you take away something positive from this and hope it helps you to find out what you are looking for.
