What Does the Bible Say About Sex? (Part 1)
It seems like Hollywood is showing its true colors. Decades of depicting and tolerating sexual sins on the big screen are beginning to show the consequences in the seemingly daily reports of sexual assaults and improper harassments.
Hollywood’s sexual problem is a microcosm of the misunderstood and misapplied understanding of our sexuality. Yes, we are sexual beings. But we are not meant to function in the way that Hollywood claims.
Our world has a lot to say about sexuality and most of it is wrong. And if we as a church don’t speak and teach about sexuality, we give culture a bigger voice than God’s Word. And God’s Word has a lot to say about sexuality. We should not be bashful to teach and discuss those things God created and educates on – like sexuality.
So, today we begin a series entitled “What Does the Bible Say About Sex?”
Where I would like to start is Matthew 22:34-40. When Jesus was asked to give the most important commandments in the law, He said, love God and love others.
The vertical relationship with God is to reign supreme in our hearts and, if it does, the horizontal relationship with our neighbors will come. Sexuality should be understood through these two great commandments – loving God and loving others.
And because we say it all begins with our love of God, we can also say that sexuality – guarded by the Scriptures – is every bit a means of worshipping God. You see, the struggle for sexual purity is a struggle to keep God at the center of your hearts and living for others
Paul Tripp helps us with this truth in his book Sex and Money. “In sex, you are always worshiping something. Your sexual life is shaped by the worship of God, the worship of self, the worship of the other person, or the worship of what you get out of sex. What this means is that in sex you and I are always surrendering our hearts to something. The things we say, do, and seek in sex are all ruled by the desire for something. In the most intimate of human activities, you are always revealing who God designed you to be – a worshiper.” (Sex and Money, pg. 84)
This is the same point Paul makes in I Corinthians 6 when he warns about being joined to the sexually immoral. Our worship is to be for Him alone.
In the series to come, we will frame our study on biblical sexuality around 6 foundations.
Sex was created by God.
Sex is good, because it was created by God.
Sex is a means of obedience within marriage.
Sex is not the most important thing in marriage.
Sex is a selfless act.
When enjoying sex in marriage, we are to motivated by the glory of God
I preached through this subject in May 2016 at Wichita Bible Church, if you would prefer to listen to the audio.
