What Does Jesus Want in the Church He Promises to Build?
Do you remember the game Cranium? I do.
I know the game is still being published, but I can remember when it 1st became “a thing” about 20 years ago. If my memory serves correct, the game was circulated through coffee shops and bookstores around our country as a board game to play while drinking your favorite hot beverage of choice (which should always be a London Fog, if you ask me).
Cranium became the fastest-selling independent board game in history. It sold 1 million units in 6 weeks, which is unheard of for board games. What’s surprising about the immediate success of Cranium is their distribution didn’t come at the hands of mega-stores like Wal-Mart or Target but coffee shops like Starbucks.
Whit Alexander, who was the co-founder of Cranium explained why they chose a very different distribution strategy. He said, “We decided, let’s take the games to where the people are, rather than where games are sold.”
Sounds a little like Jesus and saying to his disciple, “Go and make disciples,” (Mathew 28:19) doesn’t it?
Churches can do a plethora of things to get non-Christians to come to church but the mandate for Christians has always been and will continue to be, “Go to the world.”
A church that adopts the philosophy of bringing the world to its ministry philosophy is looking at church inside out. Churches that poll their communities to determine what kind of church they want are not asking the right Person the right questions.
The question should be, “What church does Jesus say He will build?” What is His blueprint?
I am excited about an upcoming preaching series at Wichita Bible Church called “Under Construction: What Christ Wants to Build” where we will not be asking what the world wants in a church but what does Christ want in a church. Our prayer is that we will equip the saints to go and make disciples so that we can help Jesus build the church.
We would love to have you join us for our worship service if you live locally in Wichita. We begin at 9:30am.
