What are the Best Volleyball Drills to Get the Best Out of Players?
If performance analysis has several uses (tactical and technical evaluation, performance profiling, talent identification, performance indicators for different sports etc), what about the effectiveness of the actual coaching content, i.e. the drills. All things being equal, what are the most effective and efficient drills to get the best out of players? In addition, are there key words that accompany the drills that provide clarity in what is required to perform successfully? Also, if drills should be as match-like as possible (so performance is translated in competition, where it counts), what about those simple drills that players like? Is it important that players feel they are improving their skills with these drills when they might not necessarily perform them in competition?
The end game would be transforming a team of multi-level players into champions by the use of the most effective and efficient drills available, especially if you have limited training time.
The reason for the title is because it’s been a week of frustration for me cause by myself (my limitations), at work (why can’t people use their common sense?) and from volleyball (why don’t players know this already!). It was this last point that got me thinking about this blog entry.
*** Update 2 February 2021 | Looking back, it looks as if I fell into the trap of a beginner coach and thinking about what drills to do rather than the philosophy behind the drills. You can read on my initial coaching philosophy of maximum reps and gamelike drills on this link ***
